Description:
Abstract:
This digital publication contains all the information used to publish U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Series I-1933 (Bailey, 1989). The map shows the distribution and relationships of volcanic and surficial-sedimentary deposits in the Long Valley caldera and the Mono-Inyo Craters area. The Long Valley caldera and the Mono-Inyo Craters volcanic chain compose a late Tertiary to Quaternary volcanic complex on the west edge of the Basin and Range Province at the base of the Sierra Nevada frontal fault escarpment. The caldera, an east-west-elongate, oval depression 17 by 32 km, is located just northwest of the northern end of the Owens Valley rift and forms a reentrant or offset in the Sierran escarpment, commonly referred to as the "Mammoth embayment." The Mono-Inyo Craters volcanic chain forms a north-trending zone of volcanic vents extending 45 km from the west moat of the caldera to Mono Lake. The prevolcanic basement in the area is mainly Mesozoic granitic rock of the Sierra Nevada batholith and Paleozoic metasedimentary and Mesozoic metavolcanic rocks of the Mount Morrison, Gull Lake, and Ritter Range roof pendants (Map A).

Sheet 2 of the map series contains a geologic map of Mono Lake (Quaternary rocks from Bailey [1975, 1978, 1987] and pre-Quaternary rocks generalized from Kistler [1966b] and Chesterman and Gray [1975]), five cross sections through Long Valley Caldera, a LANDSAT image of Long Valley Caldera and Vicinity (LANDSAT 4), a map of the pre-tertiary rocks (Map A), a map of the major faults and structural trends (Map B), a map of the precaldera volcanic vents (Map C), and a map of the postcaldera volcanic vents (Map D). (Taken from supplementary map materials.)

Purpose:
The Geologic Map of the Long Valley Caldera, Mono-Inyo Craters Volcanic Chain, and Vicinity, Eastern California was originally published in 1989 by Roy A. Bailey. U.S. Geological Survey volcanic maps are created to better understand volcanic processes and to aid in the production of volcano-hazards assessments of the area. At this time the map is out of print and the original plates can not be located. Bailey's original maps have been scanned and are now available to the public as part of this digital publication.
Supplemental_Information:
The scale of the map is 1:62,500. This metadata file is for the map polygons including the geologic units and bodies of water.

Use_Constraints:
Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:62,500 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:62,500 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Acknowlegdement of the U.S. Geological Survey would be appreciated in products derived from these data.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Polygon and arc (chain-node) topology present in appropriate ArcInfo coverages. Other coverages are point, annotation or raster and do not require topologic relationships.
Completeness_Report:
The report is intended to describe completely the igneous and volcanic products, volcanic vent locations, sample locations, structural features and structural measurements at 1:62,500 scale. Geological information only mappable at larger scale has been omitted.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Well located data items are intended to have a horizontal positional accuracy within 0.32 mm at 1:63,360 scale, or within 32 meters on the ground. The general positional accuracy of each line in the database is indicated within the LTYPE field in the Arc Attribute Table (see the Attribute_Definition_Value). Points in the database are generally considered to be well located. The position of each data item is derived from the USGS topographic base map, and therefore additional inaccuracies arising from inaccuracies in the base map may also be encountered. Most point observation locations were determined in the field using hand-held GPS recievers with horizontal accuracy of about 5 m.

Process_Description:
Geologic linework was scanned, georeferenced, converted to vector data, and edited on-screen to repair errors visible at map scale. Polygon topology was created and each arc and polygon tagged on-screen. Structural information was digitized by hand on-screen. Plotfiles were created in ArcPlot.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Lines (arcs) are recorded as strings of vectors and are described in an arc attribute table ("filename".AAT). They define the boundaries of the map units and other delineated areas as well as linear features such as but not limited to, faults, crater rims,a nd morain crests. These distinctions, including geologic characterizations of linear features, are recorded in the LTYPE field in the AAT. Map units (polygons) are described in a polygon attribute table ("filename".PAT). The identities of the map units from compilation sources are recorded in the PTYPE field of the PAT by unit symbol. Note that ArcInfo coverages cannot contain both polygon and point information, so only coverages with polygon information will have a polygon attribute table, and these coverages will not have a point attribute table. Files containing point features are described in a point attribute table ("filename".PAT). Examples of point features are, but not limited to, vents, strikes and dips, and sample locations. The REGION funtion of ArcInfo was used to delineate two types of larger areas in the database in addition to the polygons that represent the individual areas of each geological unit. Almost all of the attributes in the various attribute tables included in the report are set or calculated by ArcInfo and include "filename"#, "filename"-ID, LENGTH, FNODE, TNODE, RPOLY, LPOLY, AREA, and PERIMETER. The rest are defined by the author as described above and include LTYPE, PTYPE, PTTYPE, STRIKE, DIP, SAMPLENO, SYMB, SEL.
