Abstract:
The Long Valley caldera and the Mono-Inyo Craters volcanic chain compose a late Tertiary to Quaternary volcanic complex on the west edge of the Basin and Range Province at the base of the Sierra Nevada frontal fault escarpment. This geologically youthful volcanic system displays persistent unrest characterized by recurring earthquake swarms, inflation of the resurgent dome in the central sections of the caldera, and emissions of magmatic carbon dioxide around Mammoth Mountain. This dataset provides leveling data from the Long Valley Volcano Observatory and Maurizio Battiglia's dissertation.

Leveling, in which height differences between stations are measured with a precise optical-level, has been used to measure the vertical deformation along the 65-km-long line along Hwy 365 from Tom's Place to Lee Vining and along several other routes within the caldera. The benchmark C916 (Fig. 1) is the elevation datum (2072.54196 m) for all the leveling surveys. The Highway 395 route was surveyed in 1932, 1957, 1975, 1980, each summer from 1982 to 1988, and again in 1992, 1995 and 1997 (Denlinger, 1984; Savage et al., 1987; Langbein et al., 1995). Complete leveling of the caldera occurred each summer from 1982 to 1986, and in 1988 and 1992 (Langbein et al., 1995). The leveling surveys have been run to standards equal to those required for second-order, class II levels or first-order, class II levels. The standard error for each elevation difference can be taken to be 3 mm/L1/2, where L is the distance between benchmarks in km (Langbein et al., 1995). Leveling observations were corrected for rod scale and temperature, level collimation, and for astronomic, refraction and magnetic effects (Balazs and Young, 1982). Leveling surveys were not referenced to the NAVD88 datum because the U.S. Geological Survey was only interested in monitoring relative elevation changes within the caldera.

Purpose:
To provide a portable compilation of volcanic monitoring data from the Long Valley Volcano Observatory.
Supplemental_Information:
This file contains all leveling data from every loop reorganized such that each row of the table contains one data point in x,y,z,t coordinates (the other shape files are saved with all data for each benchmark in the specific loop in one row). Real-time data of the current activity of the caldera (including earthquakes, ground deformation, release of volcanic gas), information about volcanic hazards and the USGS response plan are available online at the Long Valley observatory web page (<http://lvo.wr.usgs.gov> ).

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Example: "Lines (arcs) are recorded as strings of vectors and are described in an arc attribute table ("filename".AAT). They define the boundaries of the map units and other delineated areas as well as linear features such as but not limited to, faults, crater rims,a nd morain crests. These distinctions, including geologic characterizations of linear features, are recorded in the LTYPE field in the AAT. Map units (polygons) are described in a polygon attribute table ("filename".PAT). The identities of the map units from compilation sources are recorded in the PTYPE field of the PAT by unit symbol. Note that ArcInfo coverages cannot contain both polygon and point information, so only coverages with polygon information will have a polygon attribute table, and these coverages will not have a point attribute table. Files containing point features are described in a point attribute table ("filename".PAT). Examples of point features are, but not limited to, vents, strikes and dips, and sample locations. The REGION funtion of ArcInfo was used to delineate two types of larger areas in the database in addition to the polygons that represent the individual areas of each geological unit. Almost all of the attributes in the various attribute tables included in the report are set or calculated by ArcInfo and include "filename"#, "filename"-ID, LENGTH, FNODE, TNODE, RPOLY, LPOLY, AREA, and PERIMETER. The rest are defined by the author as described above and include LTYPE, PTYPE, PTTYPE, STRIKE, DIP, SAMPLENO, SYMB, SEL.
