There are two annotation feature classes in this release. The Annotations feature class contains annotations for the full map. The AnnotationsGeyserHill just contains annotations for the Geyser Hill Group. These feature classes contain cartographic labels and symbols for the geologic unit polygons and hydrothermal features. This database has two line feature classes contours, and ContactsAndFaults. The contour feature class contains lines that connect points of equal elevation. The ContactAndFaults feature class defines the boundaries of the map units and linear features. Hydrothermal_Features feature class contains the locations of geysers, springs, lakes, pools, steam vents, and drill holes. MapUnitPolys feature class contains the polygons for each geologic map unit. The Overprint feature class delineates secondary products of acid alteration, clastic deposits incrusted by hydrothermal precipitates, and hydrothermal explosion deposits. The DataSources table contains the data sources for this database. The DescriptionOfMapUnits table describes the information from the map's List of Map Units. The Glossary table contains definitions for terms used in the database. Purpose: This dataset was constructed to produce a digital geologic map as a basis for studying hydrothermal processes in Upper Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Supplemental_Information: The original geologic mapping performed by L.J.P Muffler, D.E. White, M.H. Beeson, and A.H. Truesdell onto aerial photography, series GS-VBHD, 1965, and then transfered onto a topographic map. The topographic map was compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey aerial photography, series GS-VBHD, 1965. Modified to reflect cultural changes as of 1976. Topographic map is not published separately from geologic map. This map does not contain adequate registration marks for georegistration. To create the geodatabase, the original scanned map was georegistered to USGS Digital Orthophoto Quadrangle of the NW quarter-quad of the Old Faithful quadrangle, collected in 1994. Man-made objects, i.e. roads, parking lots, and the visitor center, along with stream junctions and other hydrographic features, were used for registration. This metadata file was written to provide an overview for the complete database. For more descriptive metadata see metadata files associated with each individual feature classes. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The data was edited at a scale of 1:4,800 and higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. The original map does not contain registration marks and was georegistered to USGS Digital Orthophoto Quadrangle of the NW quarter-quad of the Old Faithful quadrangle, collected in 1994. Plotting at scales larger than 1:4,800 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Acknowledgment of the U.S. Geological Survey would be appreciated in products derived from these data. To check attribute accuracy, a color check plot was visually compared to the geologist's original compilation. Discrepancies between the digital geospatial dataset and the map were corrected as needed. For more information about the process of creating this dataset, see process steps for this dataset and for the geodatabase. Other feature classes are point, annotation or raster and do not require topologic relationships. Completeness_Report: This dataset is intended to describe completely the map units at 1:4,800 scale as presented in the Geologic Map of Upper Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National park, Wyoming. Geological information only mappable at larger scale has been omitted. Well located data items are intended to have a horizontal positional accuracy better than 0.1 mm at 1:4,800 scale, or within 1.5 meters on the ground. Features in the database are generally well located. The position of each data item is derived from a custom USGS 1:4,800 topographic base map, and therefore additional inaccuracies may also be encountered that are within National Map Accuracy Standards. The TIFF file was georeferenced to USGS aerial photos of the Upper Geyser Basin area (NW quarter-quad of the Old Faithful quadrangle, collected in 1994). The geologic contacts were digitized using the Editor toolbar available in the ArcInfo edition of ArcGIS 9.2, ESRI. These arcs were converted to polygons. The arc and polygons were then attributed to match original mapping. An ArcMap document was then created to best match the look of the paper map.
