- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
Overburden grids were created for 47 coal beds within the Powder River Basin, Montana and Wyoming. The grids were produced as part of the work performed by the U.S. Geological Survey's U.S. Coal Resource and Reserves Assessment Project. Each overburden grid portrays the depth of the coal bed beneath the surface and correspondingly the thickness of the strata overlying each coal bed.
- Purpose:
-
The overburden grids were created to subsequently calculate, in combination with the isopach grids, the stripping ratios for the coal resources within the Powder River Basin. The grids were also used to define the area of each coal bed that would be affected by overlying surface restrictions if the coal was extracted using surface mining methods.

Drill hole information for well locations obtained from the USGS, the Wyoming State Geological Survey, and the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission were used to construct a database for the Powder River Basin. This database was used within the StratiFact computer program to correlate the coal beds within the Powder River Basin. The coal bed correlation information from the StratiFact program was imported into the PC\Cores geologic modeling program and the data used to produce coal bed depth (overburden) grids within the project extent of the Powder River Basin, with a cell size of 150 meters for each coal bed. The PC/Cores grids were imported into the ArcView GIS program and resampled to a cell size of 30 meters.
