In general, North American A-type granites are iron-enriched granitoids occurring in anorogenic, continental settings, the majority of which were emplaced between 1.5 and 1.4 Ga. The relations between A-type granitoid rocks, tectonic setting, and magma petrogenesis, as well as genetic associations with important types of ore deposits are well established. This geospatial database containing geologic, geochemical, modal, and geochronologic information for A-type granitoid rocks in the conterminous United States was developed to support ongoing investigations. Purpose: The purpose of these data are to present the spatial distribution of 1.4 Ga A-type granites in the conterminous United States, and to provide associated geochemical, modal, and geochronologic information for ongoing petrogenetic investigations of these rocks. Supplemental_Information: This USGS Data Series consists of an ArcGIS 10.2 geodatabase containing 1 polygon feature class, IntrsAType1_4Ga, and 2 point feature classes, IntrsChemModal and IntrsGeochron. Additional geochemistry and geochronology information are provided in Appendices 1 and 2 of the accompanying report and as stand-alone Microsoft Excel tables. The detailed geochemistry Excel table may be joined (linked) to the geochemistry point feature class using the attribute field Field_Number. Attribute fields and values were also reviewed and checked for accuracy and consistency of terms. Logical_Consistency_Report: All map layers were checked for locational accuracy of features, duplicate features, attribute consistency, and polygon closure. Each polygon has an area that is appropriate for the scale of the geologic feature it depicts. The map was reviewed by USGS staff for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. Completeness_Report: Polygon representing granitoid intrusions are from a national compilation of 1:500,000-scale state geologic maps. The compilation is considered the most complete vector-based geologic map data for this scale and coverage of the conterminous United States. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The positional accuracy of polygons representing granitoid intrusions is dependent on the source, scale, and accuracy of the base materials. In general, positional accuracy is approximate, variable, and not accurate at scales larger than 1:500,000. Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Not applicable. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Polygons coded as Mesoproterozoic intrusive rocks were extracted from the USGS State Geologic Map Compilation (SGMC), a GIS database of 1:500,000-scale state geologic maps. The extracted polygons were analyzed using published literature and information from the web-based National Geologic Map Database (NGMD) (http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/maps/mapview/) to determine if the geologic units represented 1.4 Ga A-type granitoid intrusions. If available literature and the NGMD contents failed to clearly confirm a polygons association, the polygon was attributed as having an uncertain association or no association with 1.4 Ga A-type granitoid intrusions.
