README for U.S. Geological Survey Data Series 1054 TITLE Database for Geologic Maps of Pyroclastic-Flow and Related Deposits of the 1980 Eruptions at Mount St. Helens, Washington. By Andrew J. Furze, Joseph A. Bard, Joel E. Robinson, David W. Ramsey, Mel A. Kuntz, Peter D. Rowley, and Norman S. MacLeod. ABSTRACT: This publication releases digital versions of the geologic maps in U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Map 1950 (USGS I-1950), “Geologic maps of pyroclastic-flow and related deposits of the 1980 eruptions of Mount St. Helens, Washington” (Kuntz, Rowley, and MacLeod, 1990) (https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/i1950). The 1980 Mount St. Helens eruptions on May 18, May 25, June 12, July 22, August 7, and October 16–18 produced pyroclastic-flow and related deposits. The distribution and morphology of these deposits, as determined from extensive field studies and examination of vertical aerial photographs, are shown on four maps in I-1950 (maps A–D) on two map sheets. Map A shows the May 18, May 25, and June 12 deposits; map B shows the July 22 deposits; map C shows the August 7 deposits; and map D shows the October 16–18 deposits. No digital geospatial versions of the geologic data were made available at the time of publication of the original maps. This data release consists of attributed vector features, data tables, and the cropped and georeferenced scans from which the features were digitized, in order to enable visualization and analysis of these data in GIS software. This data release enables users to digitally re-create the maps and description of map units of USGS I-1950; map sheet 1 includes text sections (Introduction, Physiography of Mount St. Helens at the time of the 1980 eruptions, Processes of the 1980 eruptions, Deposits of the 1980 eruptions, Limitations of the maps, Preparation of the maps, and References cited) and associated tables and figures that are not included in this data release. PURPOSE: This data series was created in order to make digital geospatial versions of the data in USGS I-1950 available for visualization and analysis in GIS software with the intent of illustrating and understanding processes and volcano hazards related to the eruptions of Mount St. Helens. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: This digital database was compiled in compliance with the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP09) geologic map database schema (https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/standards/NCGMP09/) using ArcGIS version 10.3. This release is a file geodatabase that contains geologic map feature classes and stand-alone tables digitized from USGS I-1950. ArcGIS-compatible GIS software is required to use the files of this database. The geodatabase is delivered in a single zipped folder (3.06 MB in size) in this release for ease of transfer. The scale of the source maps limits the usable spatial resolution of the database to 1:12,000 scale or less detailed. Feature classes are symbolized according to the FGDC Digital Cartographic Standard for Geologic Map Symbolization. To reproduce the look of the printed maps as closely as possible in an ESRI GIS application, this release includes layer files (.lyr) for features classes designed to be symbolized, and a style file (DS_1054.style) that can be applied to feature classes having a "Symbol" field by using the "Match to symbols in a style" option in the Layer Properties > Symbology tab. DS_1054.style incorporates line and polygon fill symbols from the FGDC Digital Cartographic Standard for Geologic Map Symbolization, and custom symbols for features whose symbology on the printed maps could not be adequately replicated using the standard symbol set. For more information about geologic map symbology, see the FGDC Digital Cartographic Standard for Geologic Map Symbolization web page (https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/fgdc_gds/geolsymstd.php).
