"Sedimentologic analysis of 717 bottom samples from Hudson, NY to Sandy Hook has provided the first detailed picture of sediment variation within the Hudson system. The sedimentologic data have been synthesized into the first detailed sediment facies map which show the areal extents of the 17 sediment facies recognized in the study. Mean grain size undergoes systematic changes over the area. From Hudson south to Kingston, the river bottom is coarse, but becomes finer southward reflecting change in source area and a riverine decrease in grain size. From Kingston southward through the Highlands Gorge and into the Tappan Zee, the Hudson bottom is covered by distinctly finer and uniform sediment facies which reflect sedimentation of suspended material near the upstream limit of salt-water intrusion in the Hudson estuary as well as input from tributaries draining areas of finer grained rocks. Grain size coarsens steadily south of the Tappan Zee reflecting increases in biogenic, anthropogenic and glacial sediment sources as well as up-estuary transport of some coarser sediment from the Lower and Upper bays. Organic contents ranged up to 14.9% with an average of 6.5%. Statistically distinct differences occur in organic contents between the Hudson segment north of the Tappan Zee (5.1%) and south of the Tappan Zee (7.7%). These differences are attributed to higher anthropogenic organic loading in the urban area south of the Tappan Zee. Radiographs of box cores show that a wide range of sedimentary structures occur in Hudson bottom sediments. Systemic areal changes in sedimentary structure sequences provide additional information on sediment dispersal and depositional patterns in the Hudson system." (Coch, 1986, p. 109)
