The compilation was partially funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation through the International Decade of Ocean Exploration Program. A copy of the nodule analysis data, and portions of the sediment data were transferred to NGDC for distribution, after compilation stopped at SIO, by Mary Fisk. The SIO nodule data were incorporated into the NGDC Marine Minerals Database, and are offered on the NOAA & MMS Marine Minerals CD-ROM Data Set described elsewhere. The following is a description of the format/field contents for SIO station records, major element analysis records, and "extra" element analysis records in their original format, as transferred to NGDC. Each file is ASCII with fixed-length fields. Column headers are embedded in each file, as received by NGDC from SIO. The nodule analyses are also represented in the NGDC Marine Minerals Database in searchable form on the marine minerals CD-ROM, as well as in dbms and spreadsheet form. Purpose: The Scripps Institution of Oceanography compiled data on the geochemistry of marine ferromanganese nodules as part of the International Decade of Ocean Exploration, funded by the National Science Foundation. The files were discontinued in 1981. The SIO files contain data from approximately 1,500 samples collected at 800 locations worldwide. Data were abstracted from the literature, and other sources. The four files include data source, latitude/longitude, sampling device, water depth, nodule type, and weight percentages of selected elements. Files of additional elemental analyses, and bibliographic references are also included. The SIO data are also included in the NGDC marine minerals data base.
