The focus of this project was to collect information on exploration for mineral commodities with the exception of sand and gravel, coal, geothermal, and oil and gas. Serial periodicals such as The Mining Record; annual publications such as Randols Directory of Mining; company reports; and Bureau of Mines and US Geological Survey (USGS) publications and databases, an Idaho Mineral Property Data Base developed internally by Mr. D. Boleneus, MRP, Spokane, Washington; Montana State publications; and discussions with representatives of Montana, principally the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology and the Department of Environmental Quality were used to create the database. There are 545 exploration sites and 49 commodities. Purpose: Information provided in the database can be used for a range of analyses including: identification of emerging social, economic and environmental issues pertaining to potential mineral development; analyses of the affects of legislation, affects of changes in commodity prices and advances in geologic knowledge and technology on exploration activity; estimation of recent discoveries on estimates of reserve/resource base in the United States; identification of areas of permissive geology as determined by exploration activities, and assessment of trends in time from exploration through permitting and development of mining properties.
