Particle size analyses by Emery settling tube (Emery, 1938) for the coarser than 62 micron fractions (i.e., sand), and standard pipette methods (Krumbein and Pettijohn, 1938) for the finer than 62 micron fractions (i.e., silt and clay). Pipette analyses included pretreatment of samples with hydrogen peroxide to remove organic matter and filtering with porcelain filters to remove soluble salts. Sodium hexametaphosphate was added in known concentrations to further prevent flocculation of the samples.
