A digital version of the Geological Reconnaissance Map of the Eastern North Flank of Hindukush between Narin and Kesem (Northeast Afghanistan) which was mapped at a 1:250,000 scale by the German Bundesanstalt für Bodenforschung (BGR).

Most of the historical coal exploration is concentrated in north-central Afghanistan, a region referred to as the "North Coal District", and all of the coal-related maps found within the Afghanistan Geological Survey (AGS) archives to date cover various locations within that district as shown in the index map. Most of the maps included herein were originally scanned during a U.S. Geologcal Survey (USGS) site visit to Kabul in November, 2004. The scanning was performed using equipment purchased by U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and installed at the AGS by USGS. Many of these maps and associated reports exist as single unpublished copies in the AGS archives, so these efforts served not only to provide a basis for digital capturing, but also as a means to preserve these rare geologic maps. The data included herein do not represent the full suite of coal-related reports and maps that are available in the AGS archives; in many cases, parts of reports were missing or not fully scanned.

The accuracy of the geologic units is wholly dependent upon the accuracy of the data in the 1964 version of the German Bundesanstalt für Bodenforschung original maps. No formal effort was undertaken to develop a quantitative attribute accuracy statement. The assumption was made that the original geologic boundaries were accurate to 1:250,000, and that the original geologic attributions on the source map were correct.

The completeness and quality of the geology in the digital coverage is that of the original 1964 map created by the German Bundesanstalt für Bodenforschung. No recent data have been added. No stable base map sheets could be found. Paper maps were scanned and then rectified to a LANDSAT image base. The original projection of the maps was unkown. Once rectified, the digital maps were then digitized and attributed on screen using ArcMap 9 software.
