Abstract:
A digital version of the North Coal District geological map of Central Afghanistan which was mapped at a 1:100,000 scale by V/O Technoexport, USSR (VOTU). The ten original individual tiles were mosaicked into one digital file. The surficial facies layers shows quaternary-age surficial sedimentary materials of diverse origin. Information was originally grouped within individual geologic units. This geology is considerably more detailed than any published information for this area. We have rectified the map to various remote sensing platforms in order to make it geospatially accurate. Shown here is a level 2 rectification. The degree of spatial accuracy is considerably higher than for the unrectified maps. We have placed all units in approximate stratigraphic position, though chronostratigraphic overlap exists between some units; these will correlated for finalized map based on the best available information. The geologic descriptions in the legend are refined from those shown on the original VOTU legend. 'Tectonic contacts' are also shown on the original maps; most of these are presumably faults and will be further interpreted as the map is finalized.

Supplemental_Information:
Most of the historical coal exploration is concentrated in north-central Afghanistan, a region referred to as the "North Coal District", and all of the coal-related maps found within the Afghanistan Geological Survey (AGS) archives to date cover various locations within that district as shown in the index map. Most of the maps included herein were originally scanned during a U.S. Geologcal Survey (USGS) site visit to Kabul in November, 2004. The scanning was performed using equipment purchased by U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and installed at the AGS by USGS. Many of these maps and associated reports exist as single unpublished copies in the AGS archives, so these efforts served not only to provide a basis for digital capturing, but also as a means to preserve these rare geologic maps. The data included herein do not represent the full suite of coal-related reports and maps that are available in the AGS archives; in many cases, parts of reports were missing or not fully scanned.

The accuracy of the geologic units is wholly dependent upon the accuracy of the data in the 1967 version by V/O Technoexport, USSR original maps. No formal effort was undertaken to develop a quantitative attribute accuracy statement. The assumption was made that the original geologic boundaries were accurate to 1:100,000, and that the original geologic attributions on the source map were correct.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The completeness and quality of the geology in the digital coverage is that of the original 1967 map created by V/O Technoexport, USSR. No recent data have been added. The geographic accuracy of the original published map has been slightly degraded by a rubber-sheet operation to geolocate the printed maps.

    No stable base map sheets could be found. The original 10 paper map tiles were scanned, rectified, and then mosaicked. The mosaic was then registered to a LANDSAT image base. The original projection of the maps was unkown. Once rectified, the digital maps were then digitized and attributed on screen using ArcMap 9 software.
