- Interpretation of the sea-floor substrate types in the study area from the combined data collection techniques. In general, the entire mapped area was observed to have coarse-grained sediment, i.e., sand-to-boulders or bedrock outcrops. Most of the region can be characterized as having mixed grain sizes, with significant differences in the amount of the largest rocks. These differences have been characterized by three levels of boulder abundance for the mixed sediment: low, medium and high boulder abundance (Figure 8). These three levels were mapped using the raw backscatter data and the substrate classification map and are equivalent to average boulder abundances of less than 10 boulders/km2, 10-10,000 boulders/km2, and greater than 10,000 boulders/km2, respectively.
