U.S. Geological Survey Data Series Report DS-323 USGS Afghanistan Project Product Number 163 Title-- A User-Friendly, Keyword-Searchable Database of Geoscientific References through 2007 for Afghanistan Authors-- Robert G. Eppinger, Julianna Sipeki, and M.L. Sco Scofield Brief Description-- Included on this CD-ROM are a document and accompanying Microsoft Access 2003 database of geoscientific references for the country of Afghanistan. The reference compilation is part of a larger joint study of Afghanistan’s energy, mineral, and water resources, and geologic hazards, currently underway by the U.S. Geological Survey, the British Geological Survey, and the Afghanistan Geological Survey. The database includes both published (n = 2,489) and unpublished (n = 176) references compiled through calendar year 2007. The references comprise two separate tables in the Access database. The reference database includes a user-friendly, keyword-searchable, interface and only minimum knowledge of the use of Microsoft Access is required. System Requirements-- WINDOWS Intel Pentium or 100% compatible processor Microsoft Windows XP or Vista 128 MB RAM 6 MB of available hard drive space for the database and associated explanatory document CD-ROM drive 1024 X 768 or higher monitor resolution Software Requirements-- Microsoft Access 2003 or later Adobe Acrobat Reader version 6.0 or later (available free at www.adobe.com) Software Installation-- The database and document together are about 6 MB in size. The report AfghRefDatabase_DS.pdf is located in the root directory of the CD-ROM. The report is in Adobe Acrobat format. View or print the report and figures with Adobe® Acrobat Reader version 6.0 or later. After Acrobat Reader is installed, double click on the report file to load Acrobat Reader and open the report. Refer to the built-in help system in Acrobat Reader for assistance with commands. The associated database AfghRefDatabase_DS-323.mdb is provided as a self-extracting WinZip .exe file, AfghRefDatabase_DS.exe. Double click on the .exe file and specify a location on the hard disk for unzipping the file. The default location for the unzipped file is C:\. To avoid error messages, the database file AfghRefDatabase_DS-323.mbd should be copied to and opened from the user’s hard disk rather than burned to a CD-ROM; attempting to run queries on Microsoft Access database files stored on a CD-Rom generates errors, as Access needs space to write temporary scratch files. The database is in Microsoft Access 2003 format. With Access installed and the database file copied to the hard disk, double click on the database file and a user-friendly interface will appear. Contents of this CD-ROM—- Readme.txt (this file; brief description of report and system requirements) AfghRefDatabase_Text.pdf (Adobe Acrobat explanatory document that describes how to use the database) AfghRefDatabase_DS.exe (self-extracting WinZip file containing the geoscience reference database in Microsoft Access 2003 format) Data Series Report web site URL-- http://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/323/ Disclaimer-- This database, identified as Data Series DS-323, has been approved for release and publication by the Director of the USGS.
