Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to explore current oil and gas energy development in the area encompassing the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI). The WLCI is a long-term science-based effort to ensure southwestern Wyoming's wildlife and habitat remain viable in areas facing development pressure. Wyoming encompasses some of the highest quality wildlife habitats in the Intermountain West. At the same time, this region is an important source of natural gas. Using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, energy data pertinent to the conservation decision-making process have been assembled to show historical oil and gas exploration and production in southwestern Wyoming. In addition to historical data, estimates of undiscovered oil and gas are included from the 2002 USGS National Assessment of Oil and Gas in the Southwestern Wyoming Province. This report is meant to facilitate integrating existing data with new knowledge and technologies to analyze energy resources and development and to assist in habitat conservation planning. The well and assessment data can be accessed and shared among many different clients including, but not limited to, an online web-service for scientists and resource managers engaged in the Initiative. Process_Step: Process_Description: From the WOGCC, downloaded the 032508 well header tables. The PA (Plugged and Abandoned) and WH (Active Wells) tables contain pertinent data for this study including field name, well locations, reservoir name and whether or not the reservoir is a coal bed. However, completion dates are not included. A table that includes completion dates was requested and acquired from Robert Meyer, WOGCC. Using Access, a joined table was created that encompasses PA and WH wells and completion dates. In ArcCatalog, the table was exported to a geodatabase using the latitude, longitude values included in that table. The latitude and longitude values in the WOGCC database are NAD 27, so the geodatabase was projected to geographic NAD 83 and, in ArcMap, clipped to the WLCI boundary (WLCIwls08g). The attribute "wellsymb" was added and populated based on welclass (1 = oil, 2 = gas, 4 = dry or unknown, 5 = coalbed gas). 530 out of 549 coalbed = y wells are also welclass = G (these were assigned wellsymb of 5). Created 5-yr drilling history files using queries to the WLCI wells geodatabase. The data included Well Class, which is the classification that a well is given initially. The intent is to update Well Class as drilling progresses. The WOGCC may not always get updated information from the well operators. There are lots of wells in the Wyoming Thrust Belt that are showing up as oil wells (they are dry holes in the IHS database). If a well is a dry hole, STATUS = DH. Made that adjustment to wellsymb (wherever STATUS = DH, wellsymb = 4). In order to get information similar to Final Well Status from the WOGCC data, I had to request from Robert Meyer that he provide a sum of all production per well within the counties of interest. I needed to know what each well has produced over time, or if the well is dry. Robert Meyer provided the necessary table that shows total oil and total gas production per well. I joined this table to WLCIwls08g and began updating wellsymb: Because coalbed gas exploration started in the mid-1990s, for coalbed = y and completion date earlier than mid-1990s, changed wellsymb to 2, for gas. The production table is from 1978 forward. To refine production, searched all wells drilled before 1978 that show WELCLASS of either oil or gas, and show STATUS of other than flowing, producing gas or producing oil (COMPDATE < 19780000 AND (wellsymb = 1 OR wellsymb = 2) AND D_STATUS <> 'FL' AND D_STATUS <> 'PG' AND D_STATUS <> 'PO') - 4072 wells. Then I selected from the resulting dataset those wells that intersect dry cells from DDS-69-Q. (1656 out or 4072). For these wells, I calculated wellsymb = 4. Added production data to WLCIwls08g. The well class, status and statusdate are from the production information that I received in June.
