  Description:
Abstract: Geochemical data presented in this report pertain to Cretaceous
igneous intrusions of the Boulder batholith and its satellitic plutons in
southwest Montana. The geographic area addressed in this compilation is
approximately bounded by latitudes 45.6 and 46.7 degrees North and
longitudes 112.75 and 111.5 degrees West. These data were compiled in
order to establish the geologic framework for world-class mineral deposits
of the Butte district. Although these deposits and their host rocks have
been the subject of many investigations, the petrologic characteristics of
associated intrusive rocks have not been systematically compiled,
synthesized, or interpreted. Abundant late Mesozoic intrusions in the
study area are probably byproducts of subduction-related processes,
including back-arc magmatism that prevailed along the west edge of the
North American plate during this interval. The ultimate goal of this
effort will be an evaluation of the time-space-compositional evolution of
Mesozoic magmatism associated with the Boulder batholith and
identification of genetic associations between magmatic and mineralizing
      processes in this region.
Purpose: This product is a compilation of geochemical information for
intrusions of the Boulder batholith and is intended to aid in the study of
the geology and metallogenesis of the region.

Data_Quality_Information:
Logical_Consistency_Report: Map elements were visually checked for overshoots,
undershoots, duplicate features, polygon closure, and other errors by the
author and by the GIS technician that created the digital database.
Automated routines were also used to check the databases for polygon label
errors, line or point attribution errors, sliver polygons, dangling arcs,
intersection errors, and projection information. Check plots of the map
were reviewed by for consistency with basic geologic principles and general
    conformity to USGS mapping standards.

Completeness_Report: Data are complete. All geospatial database elements are
    attributed.

    Process_Step:
Process_Description: Paul Denning scanned the original, stable-base copy
of the 1988 geologic map (Smedes and others, 1988) and exported the
resulting data to ArcMap where polygons were cleaned up and attributed.
The resulting digital geologic map is intended to be a faithful
representation of the original map. The ArcMap data were exported to
Adobe Illustrator to create the PDF version of the geologic map.
Locations for all samples for which geochemical data were compiled were
added to the PDF version of the geologic map by Ed du Bray. More
details of the geochemical data compilation process are provided in the
        accompanying text, DS454.pdf
