This shapefile shows average annual county pesticide use estimates for the five-year period surrounding 2002 in pounds applied of active ingredient for the state of Oklahoma. The pesticides included in this shapefile were selected by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 6 as chemicals of concern for both ground and surface water. County-level pesticide use was estimated by combining statewide information on pesticide use rates available from the National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy, and county information on harvested crop acreage from the Census of Agriculture (Thelin and Gianessi, 2000). Pesticide use values represent typical use patterns for the five-year period surrounding 2002. These data are not intended for local-scale (county-level) analysis of pesticide use, but rather as a general reference to the variability of pesticide use in the state of Oklahoma.
