This digital dataset is the extent of the study area of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Central Colorado Assessment Project (CCAP). The approximately 20,800 square mile (53,800 km2) area of central Colorado encompasses Pike, San Isabel, Roosevelt, and Arapahoe National Forests in US Forest Service Region 2 (Rocky Mountain); a substantial amount of land administered by the Bureau of Land Management; and several areas in the National Park System adjacent to these Forests. The U.S. Department of Agriculture-Forest Service requested studies of the four National Forests to support their cyclic planning efforts and to address issues related to (1) fire mitigation and the treatment of burned lands, (2) erosion, (3) slope stability, (4) environmental mitigation of abandoned mined lands, (5) ground water availability, (6) aggregate resource availability, and (7) assessment of mineral and energy resources.
The polygon in this dataset represents the extent of the Central Colorado Assessment Project (CCAP) study area. The USGS conducted the CCAP from 2003 to 2008 to provide federal, state, and local land management entities geoscience information to address issues related to urbanization of the Colorado Front Range Urban Corridor.
Rapid population growth along the Colorado Front Range and in the CCAP region, which encompasses about 20,800 square miles (53,800 km2) of central Colorado between the New Mexico and Wyoming borders, and from west of Denver to east of Vail, Colorado, has caused tremendous demand for natural resources and has created challenging land-management issues related to the wilderness/urban interface expansion. Regional CCAP data, including geologic, geochemical, geophysical, biological, and remote sensing data, were compiled to assess the availability of mineral resources; the geo-environmental effects of historical mining and wildfires; geologic controls on groundwater resources; and hazards such as landslides and flooding.

Spatial data sets supporting the Central Colorado Assessment Project (CCAP) were developed by the U.S. Geological Survey Central Mineral Resources Team (CMRT) and the Crustal Imaging and Characterization Team (CICT) in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey Earth Surface Processes Team (ESP), the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS), the Rocky Mountain Region U.S. Department of Agriculture-Forest Service (USDA-FS) and the National Park Service (NPS).
Attributes describe the area of the polygon in this dataset and were calculated by the GIS software (ESRI ArcMap version 9.3).
The polygon in this dataset was constructed by entering all vertex coordinates as latitude and longitude values to 1-second accuracy.
The dataset polygon representing the study area encompasses 359 7.5-minute USGS topographic quadrangles, or an area of about 20,800 square miles (53,800 km2) in central Colorado.
Vertices forming the polygon are accurate to 1-second of latitude and (or) longitude.

The CCAP study area polygon represents an area covered by 359 7.5-minute (1:24,000 scale) USGS topographic quadrangles maps. Coordinates of perimeter corners were used to construct the polygon representing the project area.

The polygon feature in this dataset contains 4 attribute fields. The fields "FID" and "Shape" are automatically generated and populated by the software for processing purposes. The remaining 2 attributes fields were added by the authors to report the area of the feature in common units.
