Older glacier boundaries compiled from USGS topographic sheets: Chinook Pass, Mowich Lake, Mt. Rainier East, Mt. Rainier West, Sunrise; 1971. Topographic sheets where created from aerial photography collected in 1970 and field checked in 1971. The most recent glacier boundaries drawn from LiDAR collected during the summers of 2007 and 2008 by Watershed Sciences, Inc. Purpose: The Lidar2008_glacier_limits feature class was created to provide a vector delineation of the glacier limits in 2007 and 2008. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The data was edited at a scale of 1:5,000 and higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:5,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Acknowlegdment of the U.S. Geological Survey would be appreciated in products derived from these data. The lidar was processed for bare earth by Watershed Sciences, Inc., and shaded relief and slope maps where made in support of this release. Smoother snow fields and glaciers stand out against the irregular ground surface. The boundaries were drawn along the contact between the snow and ice, and the rock at a scale of 1:5,000 or better. Internal boundaries between glaciers were drawn along drainage divides and ridges in the ice.
