Data Series 577 Archive of Side Scan Sonar and Swath Bathymetry Data Collected during USGS Cruise 10CCT02 Offshore of Petit Bois Island Including Petit Bois Pass, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Mississippi, March 2010 By William R. Pfeiffer James G. Flocks, Nancy T. DeWitt, Arnell S. Forde, Kyle Kelso, Phillip R. Thompson, and Dana S. Wiese Getting Started If the HTML file does not open automatically, open the 'index.html' file, located at the top-level directory on this CD-ROM, either by double-clicking on it or by opening it directly from your browser menu. There are two top-level files and four top-level directories contained on this CD-ROM. The top-level files are: 1. index.html - This file is intended to be the starting point for CD-ROM access. It is written in the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) utilized by the World Wide Web (WWW) project and must be opened with a WWW browser. Once opened, the user may browse the CD-ROM's contents as one would browse pages from the WWW. 2. readme.txt - This file, which contains data series organization structure and access instructions. The top-level directories are: 1.) Directory html/ - This directory contains the HTML files and supporting graphics to allow the user access to the CD-ROM via any World Wide Web browser. This directory includes the following subdirectories: images/ - contains images used in the formatting of the HTML pages and contains one subdirectory: 2.) Directory software/ - This directory contains one subdirectory: arc/ This subdirectory contains the downloadable GIS project, a composite ASCII file of sonar bathymetry and backscatter at 1 meter cell resolution; Layouts of interpreted depth and intensity rasters, a metadata file consising of text versions of GIS layers. 3.) Directory metadata/ - This directory contains relevant metadata files for data files in .xml format and a .txt metadata file for the data. 4.) Directory facs/ - Contains field activity logbooks. The map documents and shapefiles used to create the layouts provided on this disc can be found in the arc.zip file located in the ARC subfolder of the SOFTWARE folder located at the top level of the disc. The map documents and layouts were created with Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) ArcGIS 10 software. Folders ArcGIS_Project - An ESRI format GIS containing an ArcMap Document (10cct02.mxd), which contains drawing instructions for interpreted data files. ASCII_Data – A composite 1 meter cell size ascii table with fields: EASTING and NORTHING, projected in UTM 16N, Depth in MLLW, and Sid Scan digital number Pixel Value (0-255). Layouts – Data map layouts are summative interpreted productions of the geospatial data herein, created by the author of this data series. Metadata – Text metadata files for the spatial data sets, bathymetry, sidescan, and navigation. Shapefiles(.shp) and Rasters(.tif) may also be viewed with other versions of ArcView, ArcGIS, OpenGIS or public domain software ArcExplorer(http://www.esri.com/software/arcexplorer/index.html). To initiate the Arc Project, first be sure to EXTRACT the compressed folder completely, and then double-click the 10cct02.mxd file which will open ArcMap where you will be presented with interpreted data files in Layout View. Note that if you attempt to open the Map Document (.mxd) without extracting the folder this will result in a data path error and the project will not be viewable in ArcMap. The list below describes the shapefiles and rasters provided within the GIS project. The three elements of the layer package are; Bathymetric and Sidscan GeoTIFFs, Navigational and Instrument Tracklines and Background data. Metadata are available as HTML (viewable with any Web browser) or XML documents (used by ArcCatalog). Side Scan Sonar Files: 10cct02_ss_v1_1m.tif is the side scan sonar mosaic as a GeoTIFF file at 1m Swath Files 10cct02_v2_50m.tif is the swath as a GeoTIFF at 50m resolution. Tracklines: 10cct02_navtracks.shp is the shapefile of HYPACK ship tracklines Shoreline File: Shoreline(2007).shp is the GUIS LiDar shoreline from 2007
