ArcGIS Project

The map documents and shapefiles used to create the trackline maps provided in this report can be found in the arc.zip file located in the arc folder. This folder also contains a readme file that describes the GIS project in detail. Map documents were created with PC-compatible ESRI ArcGIS 9.3 software. The shapefiles provided may also be viewed using other versions of ArcGIS, ArcView, or public domain software ArcExplorer (http://www.esri.com/software/arcexplorer/) or GeoMapApp (http://www.geomapapp.org) software, which is compatible with all platforms.

Seismic Unix Scripts

Seismic Unix (SU) is a public domain seismic processing software package written and maintained by the Center for Wave Phenomena at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO. The Web site for SU is http://www.cwp.mines.edu/cwpcodes/. SU is compatible with UNIX, Linux, and Macintosh OS X operating systems. The SU scripts provided on this disc were run on a Linux workstation and are located in the TAR file chirp.tar, which can be found in the su folder. These scripts are provided as examples only and may need to be modified to run on another system. They also require the use of shareware programs such as ImageMagick and Ghostscript.

The example SU scripts will allow the user to strip off unique navigation fixes from the SEG-Y headers, along with a fix for every 1000 shots, and produce a gained GIF image of each profile. These images can then be displayed using a variety of shareware programs, such as ImageMagick (UNIX, Linux, Macintosh) or a Web browser.

Instructions on how to download the SEG-Y data files are provided.

USGS Software

dumpsegy.exe (Zihlman, 1992) is a DOS seismic data utility that allows the user to examine components of the SEG-Y data files, the EBCDIC and binary headers, the individual data trace headers and the hexadecimal SEG-Y samples composing a data trace, or their actual floating point values. The DUMPSEGY.TXT file is the original USGS open-file report that gives detailed instructions on how to use DUMPSEGY.EXE. The DSGYNEWS.TXT file describes the upgrades to the original program. These files are all located in the usgs folder. Please refer to dumpsegy.txt and dsgynews.txt for further information and instruction.

NOTE: dumpsegy.exe is not compatible with SEG-Y data files recorded with IEEE format. Open-source software such as SeiSee can alternatively be used to view SEG-Y data files. SeiSee is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Linux+Wine operating systems and can be downloaded at http://www.dmng.ru/seisview/.
