Abstract:

The Wyoming statewide oil and gas wells feature class was developed to provide a historical perspective of drilling activity for the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI). These data originated from the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (WOGCC), were processed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and are now available as online resources in a geographic information system (GIS), a published map file (PMF), and a PowerPoint slideshow. All files created for this study can be downloaded from the USGS website shown above as the online linkage.

Purpose:

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) compiled a geographic information system (GIS) of Wyoming statewide oil and gas drilling activity for the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI). The WLCI is representative of the partnerships being formed by the USGS with other Department of the Interior bureaus, State and local agencies, industry, academia, and private landowners that are committed to maintaining healthy landscapes, sustaining wildlife, and preserving recreational and grazing uses as energy resources development progresses in southwestern Wyoming. This product complements the 2009 USGS publication on oil and gas development in southwestern Wyoming (<https://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/437/>) by approximating, based on database attributes, the time frame of drilling activity for each well (start and stop dates). This GIS product also adds current oil and gas drilling activity not only in the area encompassing the WLCI, but also statewide. Oil and gas data, documentation, and spatial data processing capabilities are available and can be downloaded from the USGS website. These data represent decades of oil and gas drilling (1900 to 2010), and will facilitate a landscape-level approach to integrated science-based assessments, resource management and land-use decision making.

The data include Well_Class, which is the classification that a well is given initially. The well classification, that is, whether it is being drilled for oil or gas, intended to be a disposal or injector well, or other--is designated when the operator sends in the permit to drill. The intent is to update Well_Class as drilling progresses, but the WOGCC may not always get updated information from the well operators.
There are two status dates: (1) well file status (STATUS), which is the status and date (STATUSDATE) of the last formal notification by the operator to the WOGCC, usually done via a Sundry; and (2) status as of the last Form 2 (FORM2STAT) that is received by the WOGCC from the operator. The two status reports may not match. Once a well is completed, the operators have 30 days to start submitting the form 2 report (monthly production). Even if shut-in after completion, the operators file a monthly form 2 production report until the well is plugged and permanently abandoned (PA). A Sundry notice reports any changes to the well.
Completion dates do not necessarily mean production dates, as a company can complete a well and shut it in without reporting any production. The last completion date (Last_Comp) is the date of the last completion report filing; however, a well is not considered technically to be a nonproducer until it is designated as PA. When classed as PA, the status date overrides the form 2 year. If the price of oil and(or) gas increases sufficiently, then marginally producing wells, as well as PA wells, might be re-opened.
Many wells have stop dates of 2010 (table 1). For these, the Status_2010 attribute indicates whether the well appears to be active or not. For wells with stop dates before 2010, there are 7,197 wells that are attributed as being inactive, but the status for the other 41,014 are unknown (NULL; table 1).
The status of oil and gas wells in the WLCI study area might be further refined by identifying disturbed and reclaimed landscapes from aerial imagery using remote sensing techniques. Remote sensing analysis was not attempted for this study.

Logical_Consistency_Report:

No warranty is made by the WOGCC for the accuracy of its well data that are being used in this study. However, the assumption was made that the data were of sufficient quality for a regional-scale analysis.

The WOGCC database contains about 114,000 wells and is the most complete wells database available for the state of Wyoming.

The oil and gas wells dataset in Excel spreadsheet format, acquired from the WOGCC in 2010, was imported into ArcMap and saved to a file-based geodatabase. There are 113,053 wells in the Wyoming statewide dataset. Based on a combination of many attributes (well_class, status, coal_bed, form2stat), 'wellsymb' was populated to indicate whether the well produced oil, gas, both oil and gas, or coalbed gas, or whether the well is dry or production is unknown (1 = oil, 2 = gas, 3 = both, 4 = dry or unknown, 5 = coalbed gas).
An attempt was made to indicate drilling activity through time. To do this, many database attributes were used to create and populate 'Start' and 'Stop' fields. Considerations made while populating these fields to approximate when drilling activity started and stopped, are described in the Attribute Accuracy portion of Data Quality Information. Some of the logic used to populate 'Start' and 'Stop' is documented in Table 1 of this report at <https://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/625/>
