Instructions
To Access the Data Series:
- To see a diagram of what is included in the Data Series:
- Open the file named “Data_Series_Flow_Diagram”.
- To see a list of files included in the Data Series:
- Open the file named “List_of_files_on_CD”.
- To access the Data Series you will have to:
- Copy and unzip the file “Data_Series.zip” to your computer’s hard drive.
- Then you will be able to access the eight main directories, which may containseveral sub-directories or files. The root directory contains the Data Series Flow Diagram.pdf; INSTRUCTIONS.doc; List of directories, folders, and files contained on CD.doc; and the READ FIRST.doc.
- The Appendix directory contains the Chemistry Summary Tables, Mineralogy Summary Tables, and the Chemical and Mineral Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- The Data Series Data and Documentation directory contains the Data Series.mdb, Power Plant Data Series Documentation (doc and xls files), and Power plant collection schemes.pdf. If you do not have Microsoft Access you can view the raw data tables in a Microsoft Excel file named “Data Series Tables.xls”. You will not have the functionality that you would have in Microsoft Access.
- The Data Series Pamphlet directory contains the Pamphlet.pdf file. This pamphlet presents an overview of the sampling rationale and the various procedures utilized to collect the necessary samples. It also gives details on the various analytical methods presented in this Data Series.
- The Petrology Images directory contains image files from selected power plants. The file names describe the identified macerals. The JPG files of these images are also included in the Petrology Images table in the database. To view the images in the Petrology Images table, click on the hyperlink in the “path” field. The image should open in the default JPG file viewer.
- The References Pamphlet directory contains the relevant power plant References.pdf file that will help in understanding the complexities of coal utilization.
- The Selected XRD Diffractograms directory contains selected X-ray diffractograms (PDF file format) for each power plant. The PDF files are also included in the XRD Patterns table in the database. To view the diffractograms in the XRD Patterns table, click on the hyperlink in the “path” field. The diffractogram image should open in the default PDF viewer.
- The SEM Images directory contains selected SEM images from several power plants. An explanation of each photo can be found in the file named “Figure Captions.doc.” The SEM Images table contains links to the JPG or PDF image files. To view the images from the SEM Images table, click on the hyperlink in the “path” field. The image should open in the default JPG or PDF file viewer.
- The XRDML Files directory contains the raw data files from the XRD analysis that can be viewed using PANalytical’s proprietary software, or other freeware applications that are listed in the Data Series documentation.
- To access the database file:
- Open the “Data Series Data and Documentation” directory and select the file named “Data Series.mdb”
Note: The version of MS Access and the Security settings will affect the view you see when the “Data Series.mdb” files opens. See table below.

- Once MS Access opens, there are several options for viewing the data:
- From the Main menu the user has the option to view the documentation, or run preconfigured queries which return the results for selected power plants.
- From the Access Objects menu on the left side of the window, the Tables Object can be selected. This will display all tables included in the data set. Select the desired table to view the data records.
- From the Access Objects menu on the left side of the window, the Queries Object can be selected. This will display the predefined queries, which can be run by selecting the desired query object. The queries can be modified to return the desired results, or new queries can be setup by the user.
- From the Access Objects menu on the left side of the window, the Macros Object “Export Tables to Excel” can be run. This will export the tables to Excel Spreadsheets. The default location for the excel file to be saved to is “C:\Temp\ExporttoExcel”
