- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
This line feature class includes the perimeters of basins developed for the Colorado Water Science Center, and it also contains information regarding the sources of lines used for the basin boundaries. This dataset was published with a U.S. Geological Survey Techniques and Methods report entitled "Digital Database Architecture and Delineation Methodology for Deriving Drainage Basins, and Comparison of Digitally and Non-Digitally Derived Numeric Drainage Areas."
- Purpose:
-
The line feature class is one of three feature classes that were developed in 2009 as a digital archive for new basin boundaries developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Colorado Water Science Center. The BasinPolys, BasinLines, and Sites feature classes were generated for the purpose of determining accurate drainage-basin areas for publication in NWISWeb and in the Annual Water Data Report.
The original, prototype geodatabase included linework from various sources and was changed in 2009 to rely on the National Watershed Boundary dataset (WBD) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service. The WBD was used because it is a nationally consistent dataset that is seamless across the conterminous United States. Other linework needed to generate a basin boundary for a specific site was manually digitized from USGS digital raster graphics (DRG) maps at a scale of 1:24,000.
As part of the workflow, basin boundaries have been snapped to the site location in the Sites feature class, so that each basin boundary always overlies the site for which the basin was derived.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
Basin boundaries stored in this geodatabase have been snapped to the site location as part of the basin delineation process.

Linear features corresponds to the boundaries of nested, polygonal basins and, because of this 'flattening' effect, each area enclosed by linework in this feature class may not represent a basin in the dataset. Some spatial analysis operations will not produce accurate results for nested polygons and, in general, the basins must be processed individually. This dataset is intended for archival of drainage-basin areas and boundaries.

Attribute entry is constrained by domains that ensure that the delineator chooses only certain values. Domain values include the National Watershed Boundary dataset lines (WBD lines: domain value - "WBD") or new digitized lines (generally from the basin outlet location) to a line in the WBD (domain value: "DIGITIZED"). All segments in the line dataset are attributed for the source of the line, whether from the WBD or from manual digitizing with 1:24,000-scale digital raster graphics maps.

Attribute accuracy is described, where present, with each
attribute defined in the Entity and Attribute Section.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
To ensure that they are derived in a uniform way across the extent of this dataset, basin boundaries are generated consistently either by copying certified WBD linework or by manually digitizing lines using digital maps having a uniform scale (1:24,000).
Two topology rules are used to constrain the spatial 'behavior' of features in the BasinLines feature class:
(1) the BasinLines features are constrained to not have dead ends ("dangles").
(2) the BasinLines features are constrained to not overlap one another and that any lines forming an intersection in this feature class are split at the intersection to form a node point.
Two additional topology rules ensure that lines in the BasinLines feature class are always coincident with a polygon boundary in BasinPolys feature class:
(3) all features in the BasinLines feature class must be covered by a basin boundary in the BasinPoly feature class.
(4) all basin boundaries in the BasinPoly feature class must be covered by a line feature in the BasinLines feature class.
- Completeness_Report:

All segments in the line dataset are attributed for the source of the line, whether from the WBD or from manual digitizing from 1:24,000 digital raster graphics maps.

Basin boundaries are a combination of lines derived from the National Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) or by manually digitizing lines from 1:24,000-scale digital raster graphics (DRG) source maps. Linework was derived by interpretation of DRG topographic contour information in order to correctly position the basin divide. Both the WBD and digitized lines inherit an error of +/- 40 feet (a contour interval) according to National Map Accuracy Standards for 1:24,000 topographic map products. Whether originating from the WBD or from on-screen digitizing, boundary locations are interpretive and somewhat subjective even though general rules of hydrology were used (for example, natural water flows downhill). Interpretive accuracy of these data varies somewhat on the contour spacing in the original DRG source material. Digitizing of new lines proceeded generally at a scale between 1:6,000 to 1:10,000.
If the basin area differed by 3 percent from the published NWIS area, the basin was reviewed for accuracy, using the topographic maps as a guide for accuracy determination. Basins areas also were compared with those for the nearest upstream and downstream basin for consistency.

- Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:

Vertical accuracy is also assumed to be variable, depending on relief. Accuracy is assumed to be within one-half a contour interval (40 feet for most of Colorado), or 20 feet.
- Quantitative_Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment:
-
- Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 20
- Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation:
-
20 feet - accuracy assumed to generally be one-half a contour interval; the contour interval for most topographic maps in Colorado is 40 feet.

Basin delineation for the dataset occurred by copying lines or polygons from the WBD. Lines were digitized from 1:24,000-scale digital topographic maps to connect the basin outlet site to the nearest WBD lines. Topology rules created in ArcCatalog were used to review lines and check for errors: such as lines having dangles and for duplicate lines that overlapped other lines already in the dataset. The lines, representing the outline or perimeter of the basin, are maintained separately from the polygon feature class to provide metadata regarding the source of lines used for the basin boundary, and because the topology rules between line and polygon feature classes help find areas where the basin boundaries do not exactly overlap. Detailed instructions for delineation and storage in the geodatabase are given in the Techniques and Methods report associated with this dataset.
