- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
This point feature class includes site locations for which Colorado Water Science Center basin boundaries have been delineated. It accompanies the basin polygon feature class, BasinPolys, and the line feature class, BasinLines.
- Purpose:
-
The point feature class is one of three feature classes that were developed in 2009 as a digital archive for new basin boundaries developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Colorado Water Science Center. The BasinPolys, BasinLines, and Sites feature classes were generated for the purpose of determining accurate drainage-basin areas for publication in NWISWeb and in the Annual WaterData Report.
The site feature class includes the locations of sites for which basins that are stored in this geodatabase have been delineated. The sites are primarily gaging stations, but also include water-quality monitoring locations, confluences, and a few other study- or project-related locations.
The original, prototype geodatabase included linework from various sources and was changed in 2009 to rely on the National Watershed Boundary dataset (WBD) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service. The WBD was used because it is a nationally consistent dataset that is seamless across the conterminous United States. Other linework needed to generate a basin boundary for a specific site was manually digitized from USGS digital raster graphics (DRG) maps at a scale of 1:24,000.

Each point location represents an actual location of a surface-water gaging station, water-quality-monitoring station, confluence, or other site, and may or may not be the true topographic low or outlet point for the watershed.
Nearly all NWIS sites, however, are coincident with a location in the NWIS sitefile current at the time of publication. Although an attempt was made to match each point to an official USGS site location, there may be some instances where a site in this dataset does not precisely match the location shown in the location map on NWISWeb. Where questions arose to the correct location of a given site, the site was located using the site description, site coordinates, or according to information provided by an individual knowledgeable about the actual, correct site location. Although nearly all NWIS sites in this dataset are derived from the published NWIS location, these site features should be used only with the basins delineated in this geodatabase.
Basin boundaries stored in this geodatabase have been snapped to the site location as part of the basin delineation process.

For NWIS sites, the SiteId, SiteName, Latitude, and Longitude fields are derived from USGS NWIS sitefile information. For sites located at confluences, the SiteId field is a short, descriptive name for the confluence; the SiteName is a longer descriptive name for the confluence, and the Latitude and Longitude fields are not populated to distinguish these locations from NWIS sites.

- Attribute_Accuracy_Value: See Explanation
- Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
-
Attribute accuracy is described, where present, with each
attribute defined in the Entity and Attribute Section.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
As part of the workflow for basin delineation, new lines digitized from the site are consistently snapped to the site location so that the basin boundary always overlies the site for which the basin is derived. Periodically, a topological rule is added temporarily to check that each "Site Must Be Covered By Basin Lines." This rule ensures that all basin boundaries overlie a site. One site, the CHERRY CREEK RESERVOIR DENVER, CO - CORING SITE in Cherry Creek Reservoir, is an exception to this rule.
- Completeness_Report:
-
NWIS sites in the Site dataset are attributed for a site identifier and name that corresponds to fields in the NWIS sitefile. Site locations are either copied from a shapefile of NWIS sitefile locations, from NWIS site latitude and longitude coordinates, or by manually digitizing the site location using satellite imagery or digital USGS topographic maps as a backdrop for finding the correct site location. In some cases, an NWIS site is moved to a better location based on consultations with personnel in the Colorado Water Science Center Data Section and based on a site description. Such dialog with the Data Section leads to a revision of NWIS sitefile latitude and longitude information to reflect a revised site location. Sites for confluences are positioned as accurately as possible using USGS digital raster graphics (DRG) topographic maps. Also, an attempt is made to place confluence site points on a high-resolution National Hydrography Dataset flow-line feature.
- Positional_Accuracy:
-
- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
-
- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
-
The site location is verified before basin delineation using the NWISWeb site map and also compared to site description from the U.S. Geological Survey Water Data Report. In situations where the site seems to be poorly located, the site location was verified in discussions with the individual who prepares the Data Report and with field personnel familiar with the site location. Accuracy of the site location is dependent on current information available from NWISWeb, on the site map and from a current Data Report site description. The NWIS location information is either generated from GPS coordinates or by scaling information from digital maps.
- Quantitative_Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment:
-
- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 10
- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation:
-
Site location is assumed to be accurate to 10 meters or less from the true location.
- Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
-
- Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
-
Vertical accuracy is dependent on the correct horizontal positioning of the site on a map. Vertical accuracy is also assumed to be variable, depending on relief. Accuracy is assumed to be within one-half a contour interval (40 feet for most of Colorado), or 20 feet.
- Quantitative_Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment:
-
- Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 20
- Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation:
-
20 feet - accuracy assumed to generally be one-half a contour interval; the contour interval for most topographic maps in Colorado is 40 feet.

New site locations for this feature class are added using one of three methods: (1) copying and pasting the point location from a shapefile (generated daily by the Colorado Water Science Center) produced from the NWIS sitefile, (2) manually typing latitude-longitude coordinates from the internal USGS sitefile review page on NWIS Web, or (3) manually digitizing a site point based on satellite imagery or on USGS topographic maps (this last method of adding sites is especially pertinent to adding stream confluence locations). If the site is an NWIS site, the location is compared visually to that on the NWISWeb Site map and sometimes to the current site description in the annual Data Report. A given site may be corrected based on feedback from field personnel familiar with the actual site location or based on site description information.

Each point in this dataset defines a basin in the BasinPolys feature class. If the site is in NWIS, the number and name of each site are derived from the NWIS Sitefile information and the Latitude and Longitude fields contain site coordinate information (in decimal degrees) derived either from the NWIS Sitefile or from the internal USGS sitefile page on NWISWeb. Latitude and Longitude field values are derived only from NWIS information, and are not given for sites at confluences. Confluence sites are given an arbitrary SiteId identifier that is descriptive of the confluence and the SiteName field for the confluence site contains a more descriptive name for the confluence. The Latitude and Longitude fields for the confluence sites do not contain information.
