More than 500 volcanic vents have been identified in the State of California. At least 76 of these vents have erupted, some repeatedly, during the last 10,000 yr. Past volcanic activity has ranged in scale and type from small rhyolitic and basaltic eruptions through large catastrophic rhyolitic eruptions. Sooner or later, volcanoes in California will erupt again, and they could have serious impacts on the health and safety of the State's citizens as well as on its economy. This report describes the nature and probable distribution of potentially hazardous volcanic phenomena and their threat to people and property. It includes hazard-zonation maps that show areas relatively likely to be affected by future eruptions in California. Purpose: This digital release contains information from maps of potential hazards from future volcanic eruptions in the state of California, published as Plate 1 in U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1847. The main component of this digital release is a spatial database prepared using geographic information systems (GIS) applications. Supplemental_Information: This release also contains links to files to view or print the map plate, main report text, and accompanying hazard tables from Bulletin 1847. It should be noted that much has been learned about the ages of eruptive events in the State of California since the publication of Bulletin 1847 in 1989. For the most up to date information on the status of California volcanoes, please refer to the U.S. Geological Survey Volcano Hazards Program website (http://volcanoes.usgs.gov). Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:500,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:500,000 will not yield greater detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Acknowledgement of the U.S. Geological Survey would be appreciated in products derived from these data. Completeness_Report: The report is intended to present volcanic-hazard zonation at Holocene volcanic centers in the State of California. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Points, lines, and polygons in the database are generally well located. The position of each data item is derived from 1:500,000-scale topographic, hydrologic, and cultural base maps of the State Of California, and therefore inaccuracies encountered are within National Map Accuracy Standards at the publication scale of the map plate. Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: No vertical positional data recorded Process_Step: Process_Description: Volcanic-hazard zones and volcanic vent locations were compiled on 1:500,000-scale topographic, hydrologic, and cultural base maps by C. Dan Miller. The mapping was scanned at 400 dpi, georeferenced, and converted to attributed vector data using ArcMap 9.3.1 by Melissa N. White and David W. Ramsey. Metadata were created by David W. Ramsey. Thanks to Carl Wentworth, USGS scientist, and George Saucedo, California Geological Survey scientist, for their help in obtaining georeferenced 1:500,000-scale base maps of the State of California.
