This feature class includes coalbed gas well information for the Energy Map of Southwestern Wyoming. Part A of the Energy Map is concerned primarily with the electrical power sources, coal and wind. These data originated from the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (WOGCC), and are available as online resources for scientists, resource managers, and others. The GIS data and map document created for this study can be downloaded from the USGS Energy Program website.
The USGS has compiled Part A of the Energy Map of Southwestern Wyoming for the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI). The WLCI represents the USGS partnership with other Department of the Interior bureaus, State and local agencies, industry, academia, and private landowners committed to maintaining healthy landscapes, sustaining wildlife, and preserving recreational and grazing uses while developing energy resources in southwestern Wyoming. This product complements the 2009 USGS publication on oil and gas development in southwestern Wyoming (https://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/437/), by adding current coal (including coalbed methane) and wind energy development in the area encompassing the WLCI. Energy maps, data, documentation and spatial data processing capabilities are available on CD-ROM and can be downloaded at the USGS Energy Program website. These data represent decades of research by the USGS, Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) and others, and will facilitate a landscape level approach to integrated science assessments, science based resource management and science based decision making.

Wyoming Wells Database
Publication Date represents time of data retrieval.
http://wogcc.state.wy.us/
The data include Well_Class, which is the classification that a well is given initially. The well classification is designated when the operator sends in the permit to drill, i.e., Oil, Gas, Disposal, Injector, etc. The intent is to update Well_Class as drilling progresses, but the WOGCC may not always get updated information from the well operators.
There are 2 status dates, one, well file status, is the status and date of the last formal notification by the operator to the WOGCC. The other status date, FORM2, is the status as of the last form 2 (production report) that is received by the WOGCC from the operator. The two status may not match. Once a well is completed, the operators have 30 days to start submitting the form 2 report (production). Even if the well is shut-in, once it is completed, the operators file a monthly form 2 production report each month, until that well is plugged and abandoned (PA).
Completion dates do not necessarily mean production dates. A company can complete a well and shut it, thus no production. The last completion date is the date of the last completion report filing. It does not necessarily mean the well has stopped producing. If the well is plugged and abandoned (PA) then it has definitely stopped producing, but technically, up until the time of PA, the well could produce.
With some of these data, assumptions needed to be made. An example is, for status = PA, the statusdate overrides the form2year. Exceptions can occur when the price of gas increases. In some instances marginally producing wells at low gas prices might be re-opened at higher gas prices.
Many of the wells have stop dates of 2010 (551 of the 608 wells). For these wells, the Status_2010 attribute indicates whether the well appears to be active or not. For wells with stop dates before 2010, 17 are attributed as being inactive and the other 40 are unknown (NULL).
The status of coalbed gas wells in the WLCI might be further refined by identifying disturbed and reclaimed landscapes from aerial imagery using remote sensing techniques. Remote sensing analysis was beyond the scope of this study.
The accuracy of the wells data depends upon the accuracy of the WOGCC database. For this USGS Data Series product, the assumption was made that the data from the WOGCC were of sufficient accuracy for such a regional-scale analysis. No Warranty is made by the WOGCC for the use of this data. Any use of this information to any specific application should be based on independent examination and verification. Those making use of, or relying on, this information assume all risks and liability arising from such use or reliance.
The WOGCC database contains over 114,000 wells and is the most complete wells database available for the state of Wyoming.

WOGCC
Oil and gas wells database.
Acquired oil and gas wells dataset in Excel spreadsheet format from the WOGCC in 2010. These data were imported into ArcMap and saved to a file-based geodatabase. There are 608 coalbed methane wells in the area encompassing the WLCI. For these wells, populated 'wellsymb' with 5 to represent coalbed gas wells and exported to a separate feature class.
An attempt has been made to indicate drilling activity through time. To do this, many database attributes were used to create and populate 'Start' and 'Stop' fields. Considerations made while populating these fields to approximate when drilling activity started and stopped, are described in the Attribute Accuracy portion of Data Quality Information.
