What does this data set describe?

Title: Bathymetry Hillshade--Offshore Bolinas, California
Abstract:
This part of DS 781 presents data for the bathymetry and shaded-relief maps of the Offshore of Bolinas, California (raster data file is included in "BathymetryHS_OffshoreBolinas.zip," which is accessible from <https://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/781/OffshoreBolinas/data_catalog_OffshoreBolinas.html>.

The bathymetry and shaded-relief maps of Offshore Bolinas, California, were generated from bathymetry data collected by California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB), by Fugro Pelagos, and by Moss Landing Marine Laboratory (MLML). Mapping was completed between 2004 and 2010, using a combination of 200-kHz and 400-kHz Reson 7125, and 244-kHz Reson 8101 multibeam echosounders, as well as 468-kHz SEA SWATHPlus and 250-kHz GeoSwath interferometric systems. Moss Landing Marine Laboratory mapped the nearshore region north of Bolinas in 2004 prior to the California Seafloor Mapping Program (CSMP). The nearshore region from south of Bolinas Lagoon to Stinson Beach was mapped by Fugro Pelagos in 2009 for a project outside of the CSMP and only bathymetry data were collected. These mapping missions combined to collect bathymetry from about the 10-m isobath to beyond the 3-nautical-mile limit of Californiaís State Waters.

Why was the data set created?

These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public. These data can be used with geographic information systems or other software to identify bathymetric features.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 2010 (process 1 of 3)
During the Fugro Pelagos and CSUMB mapping missions, an Applanix Position and Motion Compensation System for Marine Vessels (POS/MV, 320, v4) was used to accurately position the vessels during data collection, and it also accounted for vesselsí motion such as heave, pitch, and roll (position accuracy, ±2 m; pitch, roll, and heading accuracy, ±0.02?; heave accuracy, ±5%, or 5 cm). KGPS altitude data (Fugro Pelagos, StarFix HP & XP units; CSUMB, NavCom 2050) were used to account for tide cycle fluctuations and sound velocity profiles were collected with an Applied Microsystems SVPlus sound velocimeter. Soundings were corrected for vessel motion using the Applanix POS/MV data, for variations in water-column sound velocity using the AM SVPlus data, and for variations in water height (tides) using vertical-position data from the KGPS receivers. The MLML survey data were also collected using a POS/MV system. All the raw data were logged using a GeoSwath 32 data acquisition system. Water column sound velocity profiles were collected using an AML SVPlus sound velocity profiler.

California Seafloor Mapping Project 2-m-resolution bathymetry data within this map were downloaded from <http://seafloor.csumb.edu/SFMLwebDATA.htm>. A few of the survey grids were referenced to the World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS 1984) relative to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 1988). The bathymetry grids only were projected horizontally from WGS 1984 relative to NAVD 1988 to the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 1983) relative to NAVD 1988 using ESRI ArcGIS raster projection tool "WGS_84_(ITRF00)_To_NAD_1983".

Merge all bathymetry data into 2-m-resolution bathymetry grid and clip to the Offshore of Bolinas, California, map boundary. To create the shaded-relief imagery, an illumination having an azimuth of 300 degrees and 45 degrees above the horizon was applied to the bathymetry grid.
