Fact Sheet 057–99
IntroductionAs the Nation’s largest water, earth, and biological sciences and civilian mapping agency, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provides reliable, impartial scientific information to describe and understand the Earth. The USGS offers to customers data and information on the Nation’s water resources, natural hazards, mineral and energy resources, and the environment. The USGS also provides information on the status and trends of biological resources and ecological factors affecting living resources. In 1995, the USGS began making some dramatic changes to meet the changing scientific needs of the Nation. The new USGS incorporates minerals information specialists from the former U.S. Bureau of Mines and biological experts from former National Biological Service to complement its traditional strengths in mapping, geology, and water resources. |
