For some time after the retreat of the ice the sea remained several hundreds of feet below its present level. The land shown in brown was exposed by the lowered sea level shortly after the retreat of the ice from southeastern Massachusetts. As the ice melted, the sea rose gradually. Only the area shown in yellow is above sea level today.
