HISTORIC USGS QUADRANGLES
Quadrangle Scanning
The Historic Quad Scanning Project will:
- Scan or obtain scans of the complete collection of USGS historic quads existing as paper copies only, using consistent, high quality specifications.
- Create compressed files for viewing on the Web by the Public.
- Archive both full resolution scans and compressed scans on hard media for the USGS, the Library of Congress, and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).
- Develop project specific metadata requirements and specifications beyond those provided by MAPCAT (existing USGS metadata system)
- Develop database framework for storing and accessing scans and quad status.
- Identify historic quads that can be obtained as image files through partnerships at acceptable resolution.
- Develop plan to coordinate with owners of historic quads already online.
- Support and provide QC to off-site projects, such as Map Libraries and other partners.
- Publish scanning standards and process.
- Document progress, product quality, and process changes.
Scanned files are welcomed for historic quadrangles that:
- Are not current electronic documents.
- Conform to the specifications and instructions. to be provided
