Sable Originator: Richard Hereford Publication_Date: 2004 Title: Geologic Map of the Kanab 30' x 60' Quadrangle, Utah and Arizona Edition: version 1.0 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: map Series_Information: Series_Name: Geologic Investigations Series Issue_Identification: I-2655 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Denver, Colorado Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/2655 Description: Abstract: The 1:100,000-scale geologic map of the sparsely populated Kanab 30' x 60' quadrangle in southernmost Utah and a narrow strip in northernmost Arizona delineates 17 formations and numerous subdivisions of sedimentary rock units of Permian, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Tertiary ages; 12 Quaternary alluvial, eolian, and mass-wasting units; and Quaternary basaltic igneous rocks and vents. Units within the Straight Cliffs Formation are correlated with those of the Kaiparowits Plateau. Palynological edidence indicates that the Kaiparowits(?) Formation is older than the type formation in the Kaiparowits Plateau. Structures include parts of the Sevier, Kanab Creek, Johnson Canyon, and Paunsaugunt fault zones. Regional dip is generally northeast at very low angles. Coal beds are present in the upper unit of the Straight Cliffs Formation, in the Tropic Shale, and in the Dakota Formation. Purpose: In addition to field mapping and photo interpretaion, purpose is to integrate known published and unpublished information into a detailed geologic map that can be used for large-scale land-use planning, mass-movement studies, water resources, and mineral and energy resource estimation and exploration. Final editing and data structure was created by Jeremiah Workman (US Geological Survey). Native_Data_Set_Environment: SunOS 5.7, sun4m UNIX ArcInfo version 8.1 Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Frequency tests were run on the lines and polygon labels to ensure that no arcs or polygons are unlabeled. The attributes have been checked by the authors for agreement with field maps, annotated aerial photographs, and preliminary drafted versions of the map. The attribute data in the data set should be taken as an accurate representation of the authors' geologic interpretations. Logical_Consistency_Report: All linework was digitized at 1:100,000-scale. All lines were visually inspected by the authors for proper intersections, repetition, overshoots, undershoots, and overall logical consistency. The geologic features in the map area are all described, in the view of the authors, at a consistent scale of 1:100,000. All coverages were cleaned and built in ArcInfo (version 8.1) to ensure a logical consistency that is topologically clean. Completeness_Report: This dataset includes only the coverages pertaining to the geologic map. Supplemental text and illustrations on the printed map (correlation chart, explanation of map symbols, cross-section) are not included. This map was produced to be used at 1:100,000-scale. Any geologic features too small to be shown at this scale have been omitted or generalized if they are of significant importance. The smallest objects are approximately 40 meters on a side. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The estimated horizontal positional accuracy of the data is 15 meters. All linework was digitized at 1:100,000-scale in ArcInfo from a greenline compilation map on mylar stable base. This database was produced to be used at 1:100,000-scale, and any problems arising from use at other scales are not the responsibilities of the authors. No vertical data are included in the dataset. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: A hand-drafted 1:100,000-scale greenline version of the map by the author was scanned, georeferenced, then vectorized by using ArcInfo GRIDLINE command with default options. Vectorized data were then generalized with a weed tolerance of <10 meters. Vectorized data were visually inspected against original greenline compilation and edited for node errors and general topological inconsistencies in ARCEDIT. Features were attributed in ARCEDIT by using original greenline compilation for reference. Vertical integration between coverages was maintained by using fault locations from the edited vectorization and snapping non-fault boundaries to these lines. Process_Date: 1999 Process_Step: Process_Description: Symbol linework was created in Autocad 2000 following USGS standard specifications and converted to ArcInfo where symbols were placed and rotated. Strike and dip values for inclined bedding symbols and rotation angle for bar and ball symbols were all read from the original greenline compilation. Symbol locations were digitized from greenline compilation with an RMS of .004 or better.
