Colton Edition: version 1.0 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: map Series_Information: Series_Name: USGS Open-File Report Issue_Identification: OFR-03-024 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Denver, Colorado, U.S.A. Publisher: United States Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/ofr-03-024/ Description: Abstract: This digital map shows the geographic extent of rock stratigraphic units (formations) as compiled by Colton in 1976 under the Front Range Urban Corridor Geology Program. Colton used his own geologic mapping and previously published geologic maps to compile one map having a single classification of geologic units. The resulting published color paper map (USGS Map I-855-G, Colton, 1978) was intended for land-use planning and to depict the regional geology. In 1997-1999, another USGS project designed to address urban growth issues was undertaken. This project, the USGS Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project, undertook to digitize Colton's map at 1:100,000 scale, making it useable in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). That product is described here. In general, the digitized map depicts in its western part Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks, Pennsylvanian and younger sedimentary rock units, major faults, and brecciated zones along an eastern strip (5-20 km wide) of the Front Range. The central and eastern parts of the map (Colorado Piedmont) show a mantle of Quaternary unconsolidated deposits and interspersed outcrops of sedimentary rock of Cretaceous or Tertiary age. A surficial mantle of unconsolidated deposits of Quaternary age is differentiated and depicted as eolium (wind-blown sand and silt), alluvium (river gravel, sand, and silt of variable composition), colluvium, and a few landslide deposits. At the mountain front, north-trending, Paleozoic and Mesozoic formations of sandstone, shale, and minor limestone dip mostly eastward and form folds, fault blocks, hogbacks and intervening valleys. Local dikes and sills of Tertiary rhyodacite and basalt intrude rocks near the range front, mostly in the Boulder area. Purpose: This digital map can serve various purposes. For example, it shows potential shallow aquifers and geologic units that may be suitable for waste disposal and aggregate mining. The map distinguishes units that are broadly predictable in physical properties and mineral content, making the map a potential tool for planning for urban growth and zoning. Ideally, qualified experts can use the map to derive information that will conduce to optimum use of the land in urbanized regions. David Nealey, U.S. Geological Survey, retired, served as the original project leader for this database. Native_Data_Set_Environment: Windows_2000, Intel ARC/INFO version 8.3 Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Geologic map unit linework was captured by hand digitizing as well as heads-up digitizing of scans from the paper map and negatives as originally published in 1978. Simultaneously, line symbols depicting land forms deliberately were not digitized because of time constraints. This omission does not diminish the geologic data content. The omitted symbols depict terrace scarp, deflation basin, crest of dune, margin of migratory dune group, and buried channels. The digital map was assembled and edited in ARC/INFO. Water bodies(reservoirs and lakes) that appear on the paper version of the map were digitized in the geologic map unit polygon layer. This was done to (1) ensure topology of geologic polygons that closed on shorelines of reservoirs and other water bodies, and (2) adhere to interpretations regarding which geologic unit(s) are under the water bodies. Attribute accuracy is tested by manually comparing hard copy plots of the digital data with the previously published paper version of the map. Logical_Consistency_Report: Map elements were visually checked for overshoots, undershoots, duplicate features, and other errors. The original Colton published paper map (USGS Map I-855-G Version 1.0) conformed with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic nomenclature. The digital version of Colton's map (version 1.1) strictly follows this nomenclature and was reviewed by another geologist and cartographer for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. ArcInfo software was used to create topological relations among features. Completeness_Report: This report has been reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic nomenclature. Data are complete. Map unit properties are described in the text explanation provided on the paper version of the map. A digital base map coverage is not included. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Most digitized positions on the map that depict distinct contacts between rock formations in the field are estimated to be within about 50 m of the actual contact on the land. Boundaries (lines) between Quaternary units (for example, terrace gravels) that correspond closely to distinct edges of landforms (for example, river terraces) are of comparable accuracy. Boundaries (lines) between some Quaternary units such as eolium and broad alluvial aprons are approximately located within an indefinite gradational zone between the units. Horizontal positional accuracy is tested by visual comparison of hard copy test plots to source maps or comparing locations of data on a computer monitor to other data layers in the same geographic area. The database contains no elevation data. Accuracy of these digital data indirectly depends on accuracy of the base maps on which the source geologic maps were compiled. These base maps were made by the U.S. Geological Survey, which routinely checks them for compliance with the National Map Accuracy Standards. Process_Date: 1976 Process_Step: Process_Description: The geologic database was compiled using the GSMCAD public domain program (USGS Open-File Report 96-007; program available at http://greenwood.cr.usgs.gov/pub/open-file-reports/ofr-96-0007/gsmcadin.exe). It was exported to Arc/Info using the GSMCAD export function to create ARC generate ASCII files. The gsmarc.aml script provide with the GSMCAD program was used in Arc/Info to convert the ASCII files to ARC coverages and build polygons. Subsequent to this original compilation, edits and corrections to the database were performed through digitization directly into ArcInfo from optical enlargements of the original published map. An average RMS error of 0.003 inches or better was achieved in digitizing these features. In the bfltmove.pat INFO file the PTTYPE item lists the type of point symbol, U, upthrown block; D, downthrown block. The LABEL item indicates the letter U or D used to label the fault decoration on the map. The SYMBOL item lists the marker symbol used by ArcInfo to identify the type of structural map symbol(symbol numbers refer to the geoscamp2.mrk markerset). The SOURCE item lists the numeric code used to identify the data source. The scale item lists the scale of the source map. (This value is the denominator of the proportional fraction that identifies the scale of the map that was digitized or scanned to produce the digital map.) The AUTHORS item lists the author(s) or compiler(s) of source map entered as last name, first name or initial, and middle initial. The YEAR item lists the source (map) publication date.
