- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
This digital map database, compiled from previously published and unpublished data as well as new mapping by the author, represents the general distribution of bedrock and surficial deposits in the map area. Together with the accompanying pamphlet, it provides current information on the geologic structure and stratigraphy of the Grand Canyon area. The database delineates map units that are identified by general age and lithology following the stratigraphic nomenclature of the U.S. Geological Survey. The scale of the source maps limits the spatial resolution (scale) of the database to 1:100,000 or smaller.
- Purpose:
-
This dataset was designed for a broad audience. The objective is to provide regional geologic information for visitor services and Park Service management of the Grand Canyon National Park and vicinity. The Grand Canyon 30X60 minute quadrangle is one of eight planned digital geologic maps that will completely cover the Grand Canyon physiographic region. Feedback as to modifications that would be useful for future 1:100,000 quads in the Grand Canyon area is encouraged and welcome.

Procedures used: The Optronics drum scanner (5040) at the Flagstaff USGS Field site was used to scan all maps. A resolution of 50 microns (508 dpi) was used to scan the faults and contacts from the "Geology of the Eastern Part of the Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona" map. A clear film seperate of the linework was obtained from the publisher for scanning. The clear film was cut into two pieces for scanning because it was too large to fit on the drum. A resolution of 100 microns (1016 dpi) was used for faults on newly mapped areas at the north end of the map and for faults from the map: "Geologic Map of Vulcan's Throne and Vicinity, Western Grand Canyon, Arizona." A resolution of 50 microns was used to scan the contacts from this map. The contacts were etched by hand onto a scribecoat using a 100,000 quad Grand Canyon greenline as a backdrop.
After scanning, the .rle file was converted into .rlc format using the "rle2rlc" program on a DEC alpha digital UNIX system. (The DEC alpha, "hydra", at the Flagstaff USGS Field Center was also used for all remaining processing.) The .rle file was then imported into ARC/INFO and converted into GRID format. A double precision tic file containing the 91 tics in the 100,000 quad was created in lat/long and projected into the base map projection (polyconic) using a central meridian of -112.25W. This tic file was used to transform the grid into polyconic. A link file was created for this process which was completed within the ArcScan ArcTools module. The map area was projected into UTM zone 12.
Scanned lines were vectorized using ARC/INFO's ArcScan module. Lines were attributed as they were vectorized with the LINETYPE values listed in the Entity_and_Attribute_Overview section.
Revisions: No revisions have been made to this dataset
Reviews applied to data: This dataset was reviewed for technical errors by Nancy Riggs and L. Greer Price and for proper geologic names by Chuck Powell in 1998.
Related spatial data sets: Accompanying the three principal ARC/INFO coverages (gcpoly, gcfold, and gcpoint) are a coverage of the hypsography (gchyp, produced from Digital Line Graphs) and two georegistered tif's [black1r.tif (planimetry) and blue1r.tif (hydrography)] and their respective World files (black1r.tfw and blue1r.tfw).

Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the map area (1:100,000) even though the digital data form removes the constraint of scale on a paper map. The accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in digital format. At a scale larger than 1:100,000, higher resolution data is not available and will not yield greater real detail. Acknowledgment of the U.S. Geological Survey would be appreciated in products derived from these data.

Special thanks go to Sue Beard at the Flagstaff USGS office for her help, especially for arranging for the purchase and maintenance of the necesary equipment and software and for making herself so available to answer questions. We would also like to thank Dan Spotskey of the National Park Service for his help early on in the process. Todd Fitzgibbon at the Menlo Park USGS office gets credit for coming up with the methods used to transform and register the scanning images properly.

Qhb and Qhp polygons in northwest corner of map were corrected using new interpretations from aerial photographs. Polygon boundaries were digitized on screen by visually comparing hand-drawn updates on paper plot at 1:100,000 scale with on screen display. Three Ph polygons in the western part of the map were also adjusted in this manner.

Karl E. Karlstrom's Early Proterozoic geology polygons were added to the dataset. Karlstrom supplied his additions on mylar. The mylar sheet was scanned and registered. The additions were then digitized on-screen to the gcpoly coverage.

- Enumerated_Domain_Value: UNDERWATER FAULT
- Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:

Structural boundary between mapped units or structural discontinuity within a mapped unit that has experienced relative offset between the rock bodies on either side of the fault. These boundaries occur underneath the Colorado River or other water bodies and were not directly observed.

Boundary between two mapped units that retains the original depositional or intrusive relationship. The contact has been observed or is closely constrained, so it is well located as described in Positional_Accuracy.
