SEISMIC-HAZARD MAPS FOR HAWAII

U.S. Geological Survey Geologic Investigations Series
2 sheets, scale 1:2,000,000

DESCRIPTION

Probabilistic seismic hazard maps were prepared for Hawaii portraying
peak horizontal ground acceleration and horizontal spectral response
acceleration for 0.2, 0.3, and 1.0 second periods with probabilities
of exceedance of 10% in 50 years and 2% in 50 years. There are two
map sheets for this publication, each sheet portraying the same
probability level for the four different accelerations. All of the maps
were prepared by combining hazard derived from spatially-smoothed
historic seismicity with hazard from fault-specific sources. The acceleration
values contoured are the random horizontal component. The reference site
condition is firm rock, defined as having an average shear-wave velocity of
760 m/sec in the top 30 meters corresponding to the boundary between
NEHRP site classes B and C.

This data set represents the results of calculations of hazard curves
for a grid of points with a spacing of 0.02 degrees in latitude and
longitude. The grid of points were contoured to produce the final
representation of the seismic-hazard.

There are eight different digital geospatial data sets available of the seismic
hazard in Hawaii. The data can be downloaded in either Arc/INFO
export format or Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) format.

LOCATION OF DATA SETS

The Arc/INFO export files are located at:
ftp://greenwood.cr.usgs.gov/pub/i-maps/i-2724/arc/

Each export data file uses the name of one of the data sets listed above, and has an
extension of .e00. For example, the 1.0 second horizontal spectral response
acceleration with 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years export data file
is named hi1hz050.e00.

The SDTS files are located at:
ftp://greenwood.cr.usgs.gov/pub/i-maps/i-2724/sdts/

Each SDTS file uses the name of one of the data sets listed above, and has an
extension of .tar. For example, the 1.0 second horizontal spectral response
acceleration with 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years SDTS data file
is named hi1hz050.tar. These data files are in 'tar' (tape archive) format and
can be extracted using the tar utility on UNIX, or WinZip on Windows.
