Trimble and Michael N. Machette Edition: version 1.0 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: map Series_Information: Series_Name: USGS Open-File-Report Issue_Identification: ofr-03-025 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Denver, Colorado, U.S.A. Publisher: United States Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/ofr-03-025 Description: Abstract: This digital map shows the areal extent of surficial deposits and rock stratigraphic units (formations) as compiled by Trimble and Machette from 1973 to 1977 and published in 1979 under the Front Range Urban Corridor Geology Program. Trimble and Machette compiled their geologic map from published geologic maps and unpublished geologic mapping having varied map unit schemes. A convenient feature of the compiled map is its uniform classification of geologic units that mostly matches those of companion maps to the north (USGS I-855-G) and to the south (USGS I-857-F). Published as a color paper map, the Trimble and Machette map was intended for land-use planning in the Front Range Urban Corridor. This map recently (1997-1999) was digitized under the USGS Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project. In general, the mountainous areas in the western part of the map exhibit various igneous and metamorphic bedrock units of Precambrian age, major faults, and fault brecciation zones at the east margin (5-20 km wide) of the Front Range. The eastern and central parts of the map (Colorado Piedmont) depict a mantle of unconsolidated deposits of Quaternary age and interspersed outcroppings of Cretaceous or Tertiary-Cretaceous sedimentary bedrock. The Quaternary mantle comprises eolian deposits (quartz sand and silt), alluvium (gravel, sand, and silt of variable composition), colluvium, and a few landslides. At the mountain front, north-trending, dipping Paleozoic and Mesozoic sandstone, shale, and limestone bedrock formations form hogbacks and intervening valleys. Purpose: This digital map can serve various purposes related to land-use planning in the greater Denver metropolitan area. For example, it shows potential shallow aquifers and rock units that may be suitable for waste disposal and aggregate mining. The map distinguishes rock units that are somewhat predictable (dependent on scale and uniformity of the rock unit) in physical properties and mineral content, making the map useful in planning. Given this predictability, experts can use the map to derive thematic maps that show the suitability of surficial materials for various uses by man; or to derive maps that show areas susceptible to certain hazards, for example, swelling soils, heaving bedrock, and landslides. The digital map is designed to provide geologic data at 1:100,000 scale to address urban growth issues and to help resolve conflicts among planned uses of the land. Native_Data_Set_Environment: Windows_2000, Intel ARC/INFO version 8.3 Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Geologic map unit linework was captured by hand digitizing as well as heads-up digitizing of scans from the paper geologic map and negatives as originally published in 1979. The digital map was assembled and edited in ARC/INFO. Water bodies (reservoirs and lakes) shown on the paper version of the map were digitized in the geologic map unit polygon layer. This was done to (1) ensure topology of geologic polygons that closed on shorelines of reservoirs and other water bodies, and (2) adhere to interpretations regarding which geologic unit(s) are under the water bodies. Attribute accuracy is tested by manually comparing hard copy plots of the digital data with the previously published version of the paper map. Logical_Consistency_Report: Map elements were visually checked for overshoots, undershoots, duplicate features, and other errors. The original Trimble and Machette published paper map (USGS Map I-856-H Version 1.0) conformed with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic nomenclature. The digital version of Map I-856-H (version 1.1) strictly follows this nomenclature and was reviewed by another geologist and cartographer for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. ARC/INFO software was used to create topological relations among features. Completeness_Report: This report has been reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic nomenclature. Data are complete. Properties and physical characteristics of geologic map units (rock- stratigraphic and surficial units) are described in the text explanation provided on the paper version of the map. A digital base map coverage is not included. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Most digitized positions on the map that depict distinct contacts between rock formations in the field are estimated to be within about 50 m of the actual contact on the land in most instances. Boundaries (lines) between Quaternary units (for example, terrace gravels) that correspond closely to distinct edges of landforms (for example, river terraces) are of comparable accuracy. Boundaries (lines) between some Quaternary units, such as eolian deposits and broad alluvial aprons, are approximately located within an indefinite gradational zone between them. Horizontal positional accuracy is tested by visual comparison of hard copy test plots to source maps or comparing locations of data on a computer monitor to other data layers in the same geographic area. The database contains no elevation data. Accuracy of these digital data indirectly depends on accuracy of the base maps on which the original source geologic maps were compiled. These base maps were made by the U.S. Geological Survey, which routinely checks them for compliance with the National Map Accuracy Standards. In the denver.str INFO file, the LINECODE item indicates the numeric code (a value greater than 100) used to identify type of structure. The SYMBOL item lists the line symbol number used by ArcInfo to plot the line (symbol numbers refer to the geol_sfo.lin lineset included with the dataset). The TYPE item lists the major type of line, (for example, fault or fold-axis). The HORIZONTAL item refers to the type of horizontal fault movement (for example, left-lateral or right-lateral). No entry implies 'unknown' or no strike-slip movement. The VERTICAL item refers to the type of vertical fault movement (for example, normal). No entry implies 'unknown' or no dip-slip movement. The FOLD item refers to the type of fold, (for example, anticline or syncline). The PLUNGE item refers to the type of plunge on fold, (that is, horizontal, plunging, plunging in, or plunging out). The ACCURACY item refers to the line type modifier indicating degree of accuracy, (that is, approximately located, concealed, gradational). No entry implies 'certain.' The CERTAINTY item lists the degree of certainty of structure, (that is, inferred, uncertain). No entry implies 'certain.' The DESC item lists the written description or explanation of the structure. In the denver.ru INFO file, the UNIT item refers to the numeric code used to identify the rock unit. The LABEL item refers to the rock unit label (abbreviation) used to label unit on map. The DESC1 item lists the formal or informal unit name. The DESC2 item contains a parsed portion of the description of the unit. The DESC3 item contains a parsed portion of the description of the unit. The DESC4 item contains a parsed portion of the description of the unit. In the denver.ref INFO file, the SOURCE item lists the numeric code used to identify the data source. The SCALE item lists the scale of the source map. (This value is the denominator of the proportional fraction that identifies the scale of the map that was digitized or scanned to produce the digital map.) The AUTHORS item lists the author(s) or compiler(s) of source map entered as last name, first name or initial, and middle initial. The YEAR item lists the source (map) publication date. The REFERENCE item lists the remainder of the reference in USGS reference format.
