Abstract:
ArcInfo grids were prepared from scanned composite images of four U.S. Geological Survey 7.5' topographic quadrangle maps and were georeferenced and reprojected.
Purpose:
These four grids are used used as a base map for the Geologic map of the Lassen Peak, Chaos Crags, and upper Hat Creek area, California (U.S. Geological Survey Geologic Investigations Series I-2723).
Supplemental_Information:
The files were created in ArcInfo, a commercial Geographic Information System (GIS) by Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) of Redlands, California, using version 7.1.2 of ArcInfo for Unix. The files are in GRID (ArcInfo raster data) format.

Uses of these topographic-map grids should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital grids. The fact that these grids are based on scans of countour maps with a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in them. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the grids. Similarly, where these grids are used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of the grids.
