Title:
Geologic and fossil locality maps of the west-central part of
the Howard Pass quadrangle and part of the adjacent Misheguk
Mountain quadrangle, western Brooks Range, Alaska
Edition: Version 1.0
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: map
Series_Information:
Series_Name: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies
Issue_Identification: MF-2413
Online_Linkage:
Description:
Abstract:
The map depicts the field distribution and contact relations
between stratigraphic units, the tectonic relations between
major stratigraphic sequences, and the detailed internal
structure of these sequences. The stratigraphic sequences
formed in a variety of continental margin depositional
environments, and subsequently underwent a complex
deformational history of imbricate thrust faulting and folding.
A compilation of micro and macro fossil identifications is
included in this data set.
Purpose:
These data were collected in the field by a team of USGS
geologists preparing a bedrock geologic map preliminary to
future studies of mineral resources in the Howard Pass and
adjacent quadrangles.
Supplemental_Information:
Digital maps may be displayed at any scale or projection;
however, the geologic data in this coverage are not intended
for use at a scale larger than 1:100,000.

Data_Set_Credit:
The geology coverage (hwgeol) was created by J.H. Dover, U.S.
Geological Survey. The bedding trace coverage (hwbed), fossil
coverage (hwfossils), and the fold coverage (hwfold), were
created by Raytheon STX contractors, Jeannette Yarnell, Keith
Labay, and Lana Cohen. The coverages were edited by Nora
Shew, USGS.
Native_Data_Set_Environment:
This data set was created using ESRI ARC/Info version 7 on a
Unix platform.
Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The linework was captured by hand digitizing from a
hand-drawn 1:100,000 scale stable mylar base. Vector and
polygon attributes were obtained from compilation of field
maps and other sources. Bedding traces were mapped from
air photos. The digital data were visually checked,
and the geologic map technically reviewed and edited.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The geology coverage, hwgeol, is a network coverage
containing arcs and polygons. Each polygon has a coded
attribute designating the mapped geologic unit. Faults,
stratigraphic contacts, and other linear features are
represented as arcs. When a fault is also a stratigraphic
contact, only a single arc is present. Dangling arcs may be
present (faults, etc.)
Coverage hwfold is an arc coverage containing fold axis
information.
Coverage hwbed is an arc coverage depicting traces of bedding
shown on the topographic surface. These traces were mostly
mapped from air photos. No attributes.
Coverage hwfos is a point coverage with annotation
containing generalized fossil information.
Completeness_Report:
These coverages were used to create the map part of the
Howard Pass geologic map publication. Text files, tables, and
graphics shown on the map sheet or pamphlet
are not included in this data set.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Users of this digital data set should respect the intentions
of the original mappers and the limitations of the thematic
map. This geologic map compilation is intended to be used at
as scale of 1:100,000; it is not intended to be used at a
more detailed scale.

Process_Description:
These data were hand digitized in ARC/Info from a hand-drawn
1:100,000 scale stable base mylar. The arcs and polygons
were attributed. For the purpose of distribution, the
coverage has been converted to an interchange format file
using the Arc/Info export command.

Entity_Type_Definition:
Arcs in hwfold depict the axial trace of folds. The type of
fold is described in the arc attribute table, hwfold.aat,
under the items ARC-CODE, FOLD_TYPE, FOLD_DESC, FOLD_AGE,
FOLD_LOC and PLUNGE. ARC-CODE is a numeric code for the fold
description. FOLD_TYPE is a text field defining the type of
fold (syncline, anticline, or overturned or recumbent
syncline). FOLD_DESC is a text field that distinguishes
between intra-sequence folds and folds that deform sequence
boundaries. FOLD_AGE is a text field giving age of folding.
FOLD_LOC is a text field describing the certainty of the
location. PLUNGE is a text field giving the compass
direction of the plunge, if known. For cartographic needs, the
point symbology was captured in a point coverage, hwfoldpt.

Attribute_Domain_Values:
Unrepresentable_Domain:
ANNO item used for cartographic purposes; it contains the
locality number used to associate the locality on the map
with the descriptive fossil data in tables 1-5 (in map
pamphlet). Where samples were collected from identical
localities or on a single traverse, only one point was given
an ANNO attribute.

Attribute:
Attribute_Label: LOC#
Attribute_Definition:
LOC# is a numeric field (4 5 B) storing the map locality
number; can be used to track samples between the paper map,
the five fossil tables, and this data set.
Attribute_Definition_Source: This data set.
Attribute_Domain_Values:
Range_Domain:
Range_Domain_Minimum: 1
Range_Domain_Maximum: 189
Attribute:
Attribute_Label: PUB
Attribute_Definition:
PUB is a numeric field (4 5 B); a coded value describing the
age of the collection and status of publication; used for
cartographic purpose.
Attribute_Definition_Source: This data set
Attribute_Domain_Values:
Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: 0
