Drake II Publication_Date: 2004 Title: Geologic map of south-central Yucca Mountain, Nye County, Nevada Edition: version 1.0 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: map Series_Information: Series_Name: USGS Miscellaneous Field Studies Map Issue_Identification: MF-2422 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Denver, Colorado Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/2004/mf-2422 Description: Abstract: New 1:6,000-scale geologic mapping in a 20-square-kilometer area near the south end of Yucca Mountain, Nevada, which is the proposed site of an underground repository for the storage of high-level radioactive wastes, substantially supplements the stratigraphic and structural data obtained from earlier, 1:24,000-scale mapping. Principal observations and interpretations resulting from the larger scale, more detailed nature of the recent investigation include: (1) the thickness of the Miocene Tiva Canyon Tuff decreases from north to south within the map area, and the lithophysal zones within the formation have a greater lateral variability than in areas farther north; and (2) fault relations are far more complex than shown on previous maps, with both major (block-bounding) and minor (intrablock) faults showing much lateral variation in (a) the number of splays and (b) the amount, distribution, and width of anastomosing breccia and fracture zones. Purpose: Provide more recent and detailed stratigraphic and structural data to the south-central Yucca Mountain area. Data were also collected digitally in the field using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) loaded with digital orthophoto quarter quadrangles (DOQQ). Part of the database was compiled from preexisting digital data. All data were combined in AutoCAD before being imported to ARC/INFO. Data were checked by the authors and the reviewers for agreement with published maps, unpublished field mapping, and preliminary versions of the map. This map was thoroughly reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic nomenclature. Logical_Consistency_Report: Map elements were visually checked by the authors and editor for overshoots, undershoots, duplicate features, polygon attributes, and other errors. Automated (ARC/INFO) routines were also used to check the databases for polygon label errors and dangling arcs. The coverages were cleaned in ARC/INFO to ensure logical consistency that is topologically clean. The map was reviewed by other geologists for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. Completeness_Report: This dataset is complete and includes the spatial coverages pertaining to the geologic map. This map was produced to be used at a scale of 1:6,000. Any geologic features too small to be shown at this scale have been omitted or generalized. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Many geologic features were drawn digitally utilizing GPS. The estimated horizontal positional accuracy of the data is 3 meters. All data used from published and unpublished digital sources are limited by the accuracy of that data.
