     In order to make the entire publication available, Mary Jane 
Coombs scanned a paper copy of the remaining chapters (over 500 pages) 
and did OCR on the text.  Michael Diggles compiled the resulting 
Portable Document Format (PDF) file, added bookmarks and thumbnails, 
and built the html front-end.  The paper publication did not include 
section II, chapter 13 by Zoback and Roller:  "Magnitude of shear 
stress on the San Andreas Fault: implications from a stress measurement 
profile at shallow depth," because of poor print quality.  That chapter 
is basically the same as their "Science" article.  As they were U.S. 
Geological Survey scientists when the paper was written, the content is 
public domain and a new page layout of it has been included here.

Version 1.1 - November, 2000

     Section 1, Chapter 2 was re-released on the Web with improved text 
layout and graphics.  Doc Bonilla scanned his original typewriter pages 
and illustrations, did OCR on the text, and proofread the final work.  
Michael Diggles edited the scans, laid out the resulting TIF files in 
Adobe PageMaker, produced a Portable Document Format (PDF) file with 
bookmarks and thumbnails, and wrote the html front-end.  This subset of 
the original publication received mixed comments from librarians since 
the remainder of the publication was not online.

Version 1.0 - 1979

     First released as "Proceedings of Conference VIII, Analysis of 
Actual Fault Zones in Bedrock" convened under auspices of the National 
Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program, 1-5 April 1979.  This product was 
distributed as photocopies of a paper master from the USGS book 
warehouse in Denver, Colo.  By 2001, it was only available for 
distribution in microfiche form.
