OPEN-FILE REPORT 90-130 COUNTY-LEVEL ESTIMATES OF NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS FERTILIZER USE IN THE UNITED STATES, 1945 TO 1985 AUTHORS: Richard B. Alexander and Richard A. Smith General facts for compressed (ZIP archive) files: 1. Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer data are contained in two compressed (ZIP archive) files (zip1.exe, zip2.exe). Each file contains 4 ZIP files each: zip1.exe (nf_45-55.exe, nf_56-64.exe, nf_65-75.exe, nf_76-85.exe) zip2.exe (pf_45-55.exe, pf_56-64.exe, pf_65-75.exe, pf_76-85.exe) 2. To extract the data from these files, copy the desired file or files to your hard disk ( e.g. COPY A:\*.* C: ). For DOS systems, execute the files from your hard disk ( e.g. C:\NF_45-55.EXE, etc. ). For non-DOS systems, an UNZIP utility will be needed to uncompress the files. You will need a total of about 3 MB of free disk space if all 8 files are "unzipped". 3. The uncompressed files are in ASCII format with the following names: Nitrogen fertilizer use (f_n45-55.dat, f_n56-64.dat, f_n65-75.dat, f_n76-85.dat) Phosphorus fertilizer use (f_p45-55.dat, fp_56-64.dat, fp_65-75.dat, fp_76-85.dat) 4. The format of the ASCII files is: The first column contains the FIPS state and county code (e.g. 51001 is FIPS state 51, Virginia, and FIPS county 001, Accomack County), the remaining columns contain fertilizer data for the range of years listed in the data set name (e.g. NF_45-55.EXE contains Nitrogen data for the years 1945 thru 1955). Units are kilograms per year. The state and county names corresponding to the FIPS codes are provided in the file, FIPS_NAM.TXT (see the previous Web page for access to this file). 5.
