Todd Title: Geologic Map of the Julian 7.5 minute Quadrangle, San Diego County, California Edition: 1.0 Publication_Date: 1994 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: Vector digital data Series_Information: Series_Name: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report Issue_Identification: 94-16 Description: Abstract: The Julian 7.5-minute quadrangle is located in the eastern zone of the Peninsular Ranges batholith in San Diego County, California. Metamorphosed Middle Jurassic plutons in the quadrangle include the gneiss of Harper Creek (granodiorite and tonalite), the granodiorite of Cuyamaca Reservoir (granodiorite and tonalite), and the quartz diorite of East Mesa (quartz diorite, tonalite, diorite, and granodiorite). Cretaceous plutons include the Cuyamaca Gabbro and the tonalite of Granite Mountain (tonalite and granodiorite). The pluton that underlies Granite Mountain has given rise to numerous dikes consisting of pegmatite and leucogranite. Amphibolite-grade quartzite, pelitic schist, and associated quartzo-feldspathic metasedimentary rocks of the Triassic-Jurassic Julian Schist constitute country rock to these plutons. Sedimentary protoliths of the Julian Schist unit were deposited on deep-water submarine fans off the continental margin. Lesser orthoamphibolite and mafic schists of MORB affinity intercalated with the metasedimentary rocks represent intermittent basaltic flows and sills. The rocks of the Julian quadrangle underwent at least three episodes of synkinematic metamorphism, each associated with a major intrusive pulse. Sedimentary-volcanic wallrocks of the Julian quadrangle were contact-metamorphosed during Jurassic intrusion, followed by dynamothermal metamorphism and folding of both plutons and wallrocks. During and/or soon after Early Cretaceous intrusion, both Jurassic and Early Cretaceous plutons underwent deformation and recrystallization within the Cuyamaca-Laguna Mountains shear zone (CLMSZ). Intrusion of the Late Cretaceous tonalite of Granite Mountain was accompanied, and/or closely followed by westward thrusting along the Chariot Canyon fault as well as by polyphase folding and migmatization within the Julian Schist. Three late Cenozoic fault zones, the Elsinore, Chariot Canyon, and San Felipe Hills fault zones, cross the Julian quadrangle. As much as ~2.5 km of right-lateral displacement of batholithic contacts is present along the Elsinore fault in Banner Canyon, accompanied by as much as ~450 m uplift of Volcan Mountain on the east side of the fault. The Chariot Canyon fault, a splay of the Elsinore fault, was active during both late Cretaceous and Cenozoic time. Late Cretaceous activity is indicated by protoclastic and mylonitic deformation within the Granite Mountain pluton and west-directed, deep-seated thrusting. Ductile-to-brittle and brittle deformation continued along the Chariot Canyon fault into Cenozoic time. Limited exposures of frontal faults along the western margin of the San Felipe Hills display youthful topographic expression. Purpose: This map database is designed to serve as a base layer applicable and relevant to ecosystem management, resource assessment and land management decision-making. Supplemental_Information: The Julian 7.5 minute Quadrangle map database was completed using ArcGIS 10.2, a geographical information system (GIS) software product of Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI). The database comprises an ArcGIS file geodatabase within which are multiple feature classes and a non-spatial data table. Through a join or relate, the data in the table can be accessed according to the users' needs and interests. This report includes a pamphlet, a map plot file (33" x 34") with Correlation of Map Units (CMU) and Description of Map Units (DMU), an ESRI File geodatabase, ESRI shapefiles of non-annotation featureclasses, an ESRI style file (Julian.style) and this metadata report. ESRI shapefiles have been made from the non-annotation featureclasses Within the geologic map database, map units are identified by standard geologic map criteria such as formation-name, age, and lithology. The ESRI File Geodatbase included in this report has the following featureclasses. Those marked with an asterisk (*) have also been converted to a shapefile. For more information on the featureclasses included in the database see the Entity and Attribute Information section. The Julian 7.5' geologic data were mapped on a 1:24,000 scale topographic base map. Any enlargement beyond 1:24,000 exceeds the spatial resolution of the geologic data and should not be used in lieu of a more detailed site-specific geologic evaluation. Where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data.
