file 70: The files in this group contain the raw data, matrices, and observed temperatures which form the basis for the transfer functions, FA20, used to estimate paleo sea-surface temperatures in the Atlantic. The raw data consist of census counts of planktonic foraminifera from 356 Atlantic core tops. The matrices are the transpose of the F-matrix which defines the varimax factors in terms of the selected species, and the B-matrix, which gives the factor loadings for each core top sample. Present day sea surface temperature observations at the sites of the core tops and the location of each core top are given as well as the transfer functions, FA20. For upwelling areas, a set of files consisting of raw data, matrices, observed temperatures, core locations, and transfer function are included. Census counts were made for 223 core tops from the North Atlantic and 133 core tops from the South Atlantic, for a total of 356 core tops. For the upwelling transfer functions, census counts from 137 cores were made. All but 19 are a subset of the FA20 core tops. The 19 additional core tops are from sites bordering the western coast of Africa. There are five records for each core top. The format for the five records is as follows: (A8,4X,11I4,2A1/A8,16I4,A1,1X,A1/A8,16I4,A1,1X,A1/A8,16I4,A1,1X,A1/ A8,4X,2F4.1) The information on each record is as follows: Card 1: MASTER CARD cols 1-8: Core Identification cols 1-2: ship A=Atlantis AR=Argo D=Discovery BS=Tanner K=Kane KM=Kevin Moran R=Rehobeth RC=Richard Conrad V=Vema RE=Rehobeth Y=Yequina SP=San Pablo cols 3-5: cruise cols 6-8: core number cols 13-24: Latitude cols 13-16: degrees of latitude (- = south) cols 17-20: minutes of latitude (- = south) cols 21-24: tenths of minutes of latitude (- = south) cols 25-36: Longitude cols 25-28: degrees of longitude (- = west) cols 29-32: minutes of longitude (- = west) cols 33-36: tenths of minutes of longitude (- = west) cols 37-44: Marsden square cols 37-40: 10-degree Marsden square no. cols 41-44: 1-degree Marsden square no. cols 45-48: Water Depth at Core Site cols 49-52: Core length cols 53-56: Ocean Area 1=Antarctic 6=N.E. File FA20K120 FMAT gives the transpose of the factor score matrix, which defines six varimax factors in terms of 27 species. FA20K120 BMAT gives the loadings on the six factors for the 356 core tops. Similarly, AOF20UW7 FMAT and AOF20UW7 BMAT give the give the factor scores and factor loadings for the 137 core tops from the upwelling areas. For the these areas, 27 species were used to obtain 7 factors. For the B-matrices, the format is as follows: (I3,2X,A12,6F10.4/F10.4) six factors (I3,2X,A12,6F10.4/2F10.4) seven factors The information given for each core top is as follows: Card 1 Cols 1-3: Index Cols 6-13: Core-id Cols 14-17: Depth in core Cols 18-27: Communality Cols 28-37: Factor loading, factor 1 Cols 38-47: Factor loading, factor 2 Cols 48-57: Factor loading, factor 3 Cols 58-67: Factor loading, factor 4 Cols 68-77: Factor loading, factor 5 Card 2 Cols 1-10: Factor loading, factor 6 Cols 11-20: Factor loading, factor 7 For the F'-matrices, the format is as follows: (I3,2X,A8,6X,6F10.4) six factors (I3,2X,A8,6X,6F10.4/F10.4) seven factors The information for each species is as follows: Card 1 Cols 1-3: Index Cols 6-13: Species name Cols 20-29: Factor score, factor 1 Cols 30-39: Factor score, factor 2 Cols 40-49: Factor score, factor 3 Cols 50-59: Factor score, factor 4 Cols 60-69: Factor score, factor 5 Cols 70-79: Factor score, factor 6 Card 2: Cols 1-10: Factor score, factor 7 The file FA20K120 EQUATION gives the transfer functions for SST(cold) and SST(warm) based on the 356 Atlantic core tops. The file AOF20UW7 EQUATION gives the transfer functions for the 137 coretops from upwelling areas. The transfer functions, FA20, are second degree equations relating SST and the six factors making up the columns of the B-matrix, their squares and cross-products. This results in 27 regression coefficients plus a y-intercept. The transfer functions for the upwelling areas are first degree equations with seven regression coefficients plus a y-intercept. The first record of each transfer function gives the number of regression coefficients (N) and the y-intercept. The format is as follows: (I3,2X,F18.5) where Cols 1-3: No. of coefficients Cols 6-23: Y-intercept The subsequent N records give the regression coefficients. The format for each record is as follows: (I3,2X,A8,3X,F18.5) where Cols 1-3: Index Cols 6-13: Name of coefficient (i.e.,ONE-SQ) Cols 17-34: Regression coefficient
