Todd Title: Geologic Map of the Morena Reservoir 7.5-minute Quadrangle, San Diego County, California Edition: 1.0 Publication_Date: 2016 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: Vector digital data Series_Information: Series_Name: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report Issue_Identification: 95-50 Description: Abstract: The Morena Reservoir quadrangle is located in the south-central part of the Peninsular Ranges batholith. Prebatholithic and plutonic map units of the quadrangle include units that occur in both eastern and western zones of the Peninsular Ranges batholith: from east to west, the Julian Schist (JTrm); the gneiss of Harper Creek (Jhc); the granodiorite of Cuyamaca Reservoir (Jcr); the Tonalite of Granite Mountain (Kgm); the Tonalite of La Posta (Klp); a unit of metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks (KJvs); the quartz diorite of East Mesa (KJem); the tonalite of Japatul Valley (Kjv); the monzogranite of Chiquito Peak (Kcp); the monzogranite of Corte Madera (Kcm); a unit of leucocratic dikes (Kl); the Cuyamaca Gabbro (Kc); and the tonalite of Las Bancas (Klb). Scattered late Cenozoic deposits including fanglomerate (QTf), colluvium (Qc), younger alluvium (Qya), and alluvium of active washes (Qaw) overlie basement rocks. The major structure in the Morena Reservoir quadrangle is the 22-km-long Hauser Canyon lineament, one of two extensive west-northwest-trending lineaments in this part of the batholith. The ductile-to-brittle Hauser Canyon Fault is exposed in the canyon that eroded along this lineament. Western and eastern segments of the fault exhibit left-lateral offset of plutonic contacts of about 1-2 km. The central segment of the fault truncates contacts within the zoned Long Potrero-Granite Mountain-La Posta plutonic complex. A structural study by Rector (1994) indicated fault activity during, and closely following, intrusion of the complex accompanied by uplift of the southern block relative to the northern block. Scarce zones of breccia exposed in and near the canyon bottom suggest Neogene reactivation of the fault. The Morena Reservoir quadrangle contains screens consisting of, on the east, Triassic-Jurassic marine turbidites (the Julian Schist) and, on the west, Cretaceous-Jurassic metasedimentary and metavolcanic back-arc basinal rocks (unit KJvs). These screens closely constrain a prebatholithic boundary, which, together with the westernmost border of Jurassic plutons, marks the trace of a suture that extends the length of the Peninsular Ranges batholith separating it into western and eastern zones. Uranium-lead zircon ages of plutons of the Long Potrero plutonic complex, which intruded the suture, for example, ~107 Ma for Granite Mountain and ~110 for La Posta (Todd and others, 2014), suggest that movement on the suture had ceased by the late Early Cretaceous in this part of the batholith. Purpose: This map database is designed to serve as a base layer applicable and relevant to ecosystem management, resource assessment, and land management decision-making. Supplemental_Information: The Morena Reservoir 7.5-minute-quadrangle map database was completed using ArcGIS 10.2, a geographical information system (GIS) software product of Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI). The database comprises an ArcGIS file geodatabase within which are multiple feature classes. This report includes a pamphlet, a map plot file with Correlation of Map Units (CMU) and Description of Map Units (DMU), an ESRI File geodatabase, ESRI shapefiles of the non-annotation featureclasses, an ESRI style file (MorenaRes.style) and this metadata report. Within the geologic map database, map units are identified by standard geologic map criteria such as formation name, age, and lithology. The ESRI File Geodatbase included in this report has the following feature classes. Those marked with an asterisk (*) have also been converted to a shapefile. For more information on the feature classes included in the database see the Entity and Attribute Information section. The author reviewed the data. Attribute values for each feature match the author's intent. Logical_Consistency_Report: A topology class was used to insure digitizing consistency of polylines in the MorRes_Geolines dataset and polygons in the MorRes_Geopolys dataset. There are no overlapping lines, no overlapping or sliver polygons. Line intersections are topologically correct. The dangles and pseudo nodes that are present were confirmed that they are acceptable to properly portray geologic features. Completeness_Report: This database is considered complete.
