Box, S. E., Bookstrom, A. A., Zientek, M. L., Derkey, P. D., Ashley, R. P., Elliott, J. E., and Peters, S. G., 1996, Assessment of undiscovered mineral resources in the Pacific Northwest: a contribution to the Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-682, 425 p. This report provides information on the potential for undiscovered metallic mineral resources in the interior Columbia River Basin area and surrounding areas of the Pacific Northwest for a U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management interagency project, the Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project (ICBEMP). The area includes all of the states of Idaho and Washington, Oregon, and parts of California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana. Quantitative estimates of undiscovered metallic mineral resources (gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, platinum group elements, and cobalt) are made for the interior Columbia River Basin area. The report includes page-sized maps of tracts or areas that are permissive and favorable for the occurrence of 30 different metallic mineral deposit types. Supporting data on the delineation of these permissive and favorable tracts, on past mine production, and on the rationales for the estimates of the number of undiscovered deposits are given. The report also describes the contents of a digital dataset (approximately 12 MB) which consists of ARC/INFO Export format files and associated macro programs. The dataset includes macro programs for creating ARC/INFO graphics files of the maps at a scale of 1:2,000,000. Instructions for obtaining the dataset over the Internet are provided in the report. Requirements: A networked computer system is required to copy the dataset from the host computer across the Internet. A Geographic Information System capable of importing ARC/INFO Export format files is required for access to the digital files. The digital dataset files are in UNIX ASCII format.
