Citation_Information Originator: Schilling, Steve P. Publication_Date: 4/1/96 Title: Lava flow and related hazards of Mount Adams, Washington Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Format: map Series_Information Series_Name: OFR 96-178b Publication_Information Publication_Place: Vancouver, WA Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Hazards/ Larger_Work_Citation: OFR 96-178 Scale_Denominator: 100000

Description Abstract This data set shows the boundaries for areas of volcanic hazard from Mount Adams, Washington (Scott and others, 1995). The lines in this data set encompass polygons labeled according to the type of volcanic hazard. Nine registration marks are distributed over the hazard zones. The coverage is in the universal transverse mercator projection.

ANY USE OF TRADE, FIRM, OR PRODUCT NAMES IS FOR DESCRIPTIVE PURPOSES ONLY AND DOES NOT IMPLY ENDORSEMENT BY THE U.S. GOVERNMENT.

Keywords: None.

Purpose This data set is intended for analysis, planning, and making maps of hazards. The polygon boundaries do not mark a distinct change between hazard and no-hazard areas. The degree of hazard decreases with increase of distance or elevation outside the boundary. Because many volcanic hazards, particularly debris flows and debris avalanches are complex phenomena, it is recommended that users read Scott and others (1995) prior to using this data.

Supplemental_Information Procedures_Used A stable base map with linework was obtained from the authors. Latitude, longitude registration ticks were added to the base and used to orient the map on a digitizing tablet. Linework was collected in ArcEdit with digitizer inch units, a weed tolerance of 0, and a nodesnap set to closest 0.05 inches. A second coverage was created from the original. The decimal degree latitude and longitude values were substituted for the digitizer inch values in the second coverage. The second coverage was reprojected to a UTM projection with parameters of zone 10, units in meters, and a spheroid of Clarke 1866. The original coverage was transformed to the second projection to create a coverage in meters. RMS values were inspected during the transformation. The final coverage was plotted at at the same scale as the base map, overlain on the basemap and checked for errors. The southern volcanic zone boundary was extended south and clipped with the 1:100000 Columbia River shoreline. The data set was renamed to admlava for Mount Adams lava hazard zone.

Overview_Description Entity_and_Attribute_Overview Polygons were given an attribute (item CODE) linking them to one of three hazard zones (Scott and others, 1995). These attributes, added to the polygon attribute table (ADMLAVA.PAT), are as follows: CODE HAZARD ZONE 0 universal polygon 1 Hazard Zone LA - lahars started by snow and ice melt from lava and pyroclastic flows, lava, and pyroclastic flows. 2 Hazard Zone LB - lava flows, pyroclastic flows, and thick near-vent tephra deposits from vents at the north and south ends of the Mount Adams and Indian Heaven volcanic fields 3 Hazard Zone LC - lava flows, pyroclastic flows, and thick near-vent tephra deposits from Simcoe Mountains volcanic field and other part of southern Washington Cascade Range
