Description Abstract This data set shows the tephra fall hazard zone for Mount Rainier (Hoblitt and others, 1995). The lines encompass several polygons each labeled for identification in the hazard zone. Four registration marks lie outside the polygons. The coverage in in the universal transverse mercator projection. This data set was used to produce inset maps of tephra fall hazard in the volcano hazard assessment of Mount Rainier, Washington (Hoblitt and others, 1995).

Purpose This data set is designed for display or visual inspection only and should not be used for detailed analysis. The polygon boundaries do not mark a distinct change between hazard and no-hazard areas. The degree of hazard decreases with increase of distance outside the boundary.

Supplemental_Information Procedures_Used The file was imported from inhouse software at the Cascades Volcanic Observatory using the DXFINFO and DXFARC commands. The file was edited in ArcEdit to remove annotation and add labels and attributes. The projection was defined as Universal Transverse Mercator with zone 10, units in meters, and a spheroid of Clarke 1866. The final coverage was plotted for visual inspection by the authors. The data set was renamed to rainteph10 for annual probability of tephra fall of 10 centimeters of ash from Mount Rainier, Washington.

Overview_Description Entity_and_Attribute_Overview Two attributes were added to the RAINTEPH10.PAT file. The attribute PCODE is an identifier that may be linked to a lookup table for coloring map output and the attribute PERCNTPROB is the percent probability of annual tephra fall described in Hoblitt and others (1995).
