Description Abstract This data set shows the boundaries for the Case M debris flow or debris avalanche zone for Mount Rainier (Scott and Vallance, 1995). The lines in this data set encompass several polygons each labeled for inclusion or exclusion in the zone. Six registration marks lie outside the polygons. The coverage is in the universal transverse mercator projection. This data set was used to produce an inset map of low-probability, high-consequence events in the volcano hazard assessment of Mount Rainier, Washington (Hoblitt and other, 1995).

Purpose This data set is designed for display or visual inspection only and should not be used for detailed analysis. The polygon boundary does not mark a detailed change between hazard and no-hazard areas. The degree of hazard decreases with increase of distance outside the boundary.

Supplemental_Information Procedures_Used A stable base map with linework was obtained from the authors. Latitude, longitude registration ticks were added to the base and used to orient the map on a digitizing tablet. Linework was collected in ArcEdit with digitizer inch units, a weed tolerance of 0, and a nodesnap set to closest 0.05 inches. A second coverage was created from the original. The decimal degree latitude and longitude values were substituted for the digitizer inch values in the second coverage. The second coverage was reprojected to a UTM projection with parameters of zone 10, units in meters, and a spheroid of Clarke 1866. The original coverage was transformed to the second projection to create a coverage in meters. RMS values were inspected during the transformation. After digitizing was complete the final coverage was plotted at the same scale as the base map, overlain in the basemap and checked for errors. Lines were added to close polygons that are NOT part of the original data, they are coded as indicated in the above section. The data set was renamed to rnrmlahar for Mount Rainier Case M debris flow and debris avalanche hazard zone.
