The files on this CD-ROM (2 discs) are part of U.S.
Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-274, entitled "High-Resolution
Seismic Reflection Surveys of Lake Baikal, Siberia," by S.M. Colman, D.S.
Foster, and J. Hatton. This pair of CD-ROMs contains the 15-cubic-inch
water-gun seismic data collected by a team from the U.S. Geological Survey,
Woods Hole, MA from 1990-1992 on Lake Baikal.
This disk is organized as follows:
README.HTM This file.
HTML directory/folder Interactive data set.
SEIS91 directory/folder Seismic data, 1991 lines.
SEIS92 directory/folder Seismic data, 1992 lines.
NAV directory/folder Navigation data, by year collected.
The interactive data set, located in the "HTML" directory/folder
is in HyperText Markup Language (HTML) format, similar to that
used for material on the World Wide Web. To examine this material, obtain a
copy of an HTML viewer, such as NCSA Mosaic, Netscape Navigator, or
Microsoft Explorer. From one of these programs, choose the "Open Location"
option from the File menu, and enter the address of the file "COVER.HTM" or
"CONTENTS.HTM" on the disk. HTML version 1 is used by all features of the
interactive data set, so virtually any HTML viewer should work.
The interactive data set contains descriptions of the data and their
collection, along with related text material. It also contains location
maps, a table of seismic profiles and related data, and image files (GIF
format) for each of the profiles.
Disk 1 (directory "NAV") contains the navigation data (date, time,
latitude, and longitude) in ASCII format. The actual seismic data, in
GZIP-compressed SEGY format, is in the "SEIS92" directory (CD Disc 1) and the
"SEIS91" directory (CD Disc 2). See the page "Using This Data Set" of the
interactive data set for more information.
