Lake Pontchartrain (a 630 square mile estuary) is just a part of the whole Pontchartrain watershed or basin. All the water and land included in this basin (depicted in white) drains to the lake. Stormwater from New Orleans and its suburbs is pumped into the lake to prevent flooding. The lake is also tidally influenced by the Pearl River Basin (shown in yellow) |
